Thames' Grand Slam Lifts Fisher Cats into First Place

July 18, 2010 - Eastern League (EL1)
New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release

(Manchester, NH) ---A grand slam by Eric Thames was the difference in a 6-2 Fisher Cats (57-38) victory over the Mets (50-45) at Merchantsauto.com Stadium Sunday. The blast in front of 5,967 fans helped New Hampshire split the four game series against Binghamton, and moved the Fisher Cats back into first place, a half game ahead of Trenton, in the Eastern League's Eastern Division.

New Hampshire broke the game open with five runs in the bottom of the third, highlighted by a grand slam from Thames, which brought the score to 6-1. Thames' no-doubter scored Darin Mastroianni (2 for 4), Adeiny Hechavarria and Travis Snider, who all reached on singles. The left fielder leads the team with 18 home runs and 70 RBI. Luis Sanchez, who started the rally with a walk, scored the first tally of the inning on Snider's base knock.

Snider (2 for 3, 2 runs, 2 RBI) took it upon himself to get the Fisher Cats on the scoreboard with a solo shot in the bottom of the first. Snider's two-out home run on a 1-2 offering gave New Hampshire the early 1-0 advantage. The blast was the designated hitter's first in a Fisher Cats uniform in 10 games. He hit 17 home runs for New Hampshire in 98 contests in 2008.

Kirk Nieuwenhuis tied the game up at 1-1 with one swing of the bat. In the top of the third, Nieuwenhuis pulled a homer to right on 1-1 pitch.

Binghamton's Michael Fisher touched them all in the top of the sixth to narrow the gap at 6-2 with the game's fourth long ball. The homer also marked Fisher's third of the season.

Fisher Cats starter Zach Stewart (8-2, 4.13) finished his day after six innings to record the victory. Stewart allowed, two runs, scattering seven hits, while striking out five and walking four. Stewart worked out of a no-out, bases loaded jam in the top of the fourth by inducing a line drive out to a charging Thames, a strikeout and a pop-up to shortstop. Trystan Magnuson followed up Stewart's quality start by earning a three-inning save. He only allowed two hits while striking up three.

Mark Cohoon (1-2, 7.03) suffered the loss for Binghamton. The southpaw gave up his six earned runs on six hits, while striking out seven and walking one.

The Fisher Cats will host the Portland Sea Dogs, Double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, in the first of a three-game set Monday at Merchantsauto.com Stadium. A pair of right-handers will face off in New Hampshire's Randy Boone (2-4, 3.80) and Portland's Kyle Weiland (4-5, 4.30). Fisher Cats Pre Game begins at 6:45 p.m. on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network with Bob Lipman.

An Atlas Fireworks Show follows the game Monday. Fans will also be playing USA Subs Baseball Bingo. For tickets, visit www.nhfishercats.com or call (603) 641-2005.
