Terry Emmert Statement Regarding Meadowlark Lemon

January 2, 2016 - Arena Football League (AFL)
Portland Thunder News Release

May the following statement serve in place of any interview requests for Portland Thunder owner Terry Emmert, regarding the passing of his friend, Meadowlark Lemon:

"I wish to send my condolences to Lemon family, and especially to our dear friend Meadow, on the passing of Meadowlark earlier this week. I had the extreme privilege of getting to know Meadowlark over the last several years, and I understand that the loss of such a kind and passionate man will take some getting used to."

"Meadowlark spent a couple weeks with us at our home, and during that time it became clear that he was passionate about all sports, not just basketball. He told me several times that 'sports is entertainment', and that the most important part is to provide fans with a great show. Meadowlark loved Arena Football, and through Meadow, and their involvement with the Globetrotters, they helped us lay a foundation for a fan-friendly, fun game presentation for the Thunder. He will be greatly missed."

Meadowlark, who was deemed the "Clown Prince of Basketball", was a member of the Harlem Globetrotters for 24 years, appearing in over 16,000 games across 100+ countries, and was a 2003 inductee to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

Meadowlark, along with his son Meadow, began their relationship with Terry Emmert assisting with Emmert's IBL franchise, the Portland Chinooks, prior to the development of the Thunder. The relationship continued, with Meadowlark becoming big fan a supporter of the Thunder.
