Ten Lumberjacks Participate in 2013 NHL Development Camps

MUSKEGON, Michigan - The Muskegon Lumberjacks are proud to announce that over the course of July, a total of ten current and former Lumberjacks got to take part in a National Hockey League Development Camp following the conclusion of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft in late June.

Out of the ten players that finished their junior careers with Muskegon, seven were already a draft pick of their respective teams while three were invited by an NHL team as a free agent.

The lone Lumberjacks' 2011 NHL draft pick that participated in camp this summer was alum Patrick Koudys, who was drafted by the Washington Capitals in the fifth round of the draft at 147th overall. The Smithville, Ontario native took part in the Capitals Development Camp that took place from July 8-13th at the Kettler Capitals Iceplex in Arlington, Virginia.

In his lone season with the Lumberjacks during the 2012-13 season, Koudys registered 15 points (1 goal and 14 assists) to go along with a plus-ten rating in 67 games played. The defenseman will be playing collegiately at Penn State University next season as a junior.

Out of the 2012 NHL Draft, five Lumberjacks' alums had a chance to skate in development camp with their respective teams that drafted them. Adam Gilmour, who was chosen by the Minnesota Wild in the fourth round of the draft at 98th overall, participated in the Wild Development Camp that was held from July 9-13th at the Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul, Minnesota.

During the 2012-13 USHL season, the Hanover, Massachusetts native led the Lumberjacks in scoring with 48 points (20 goals and 28 assists) to go along with a plus-18 rating in 67 games played. The forward will be attending Boston College in the fall to begin his collegiate career.

Defenseman Doyle Somerby also had a chance to partake in the New York Islanders Development Camp that was held from July 8-11th at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, New York. The Marblehead, Massachusetts native was a fifth round pick by the Islanders at 125th overall in 2012.

In his short time with the Lumberjacks last season, Somerby played in ten games and netted a pair of goals and will begin his college hockey career for Boston University in the fall.

Another fifth round pick during the 2012 NHL Draft in alum Brendan Woods had the chance to participate in the Carolina Hurricanes Development Camp that was held from July 16-20th at the PNC Arena in Raleigh, North Carolina. The Fairfax, Virginia native was selected at 129th overall by the Hurricanes in 2012.

During the 2010-11 season, Woods totaled 28 points (15 goals and 13 assists) in 63 games played with the Lumberjacks and went on to play two years collegiately with the University of Wisconsin. Following his sophomore season with the Badgers, Woods became the first Lumberjacks alum to sign an NHL entry level contract as he inked a three-year deal with Carolina in April of 2013. The forward will be playing for the Hurricanes' American Hockey League affiliate in the Charlotte Checkers next season.

Matt DeBlouw, a seventh round draft pick by the Calgary Flames at 186th overall in 2012, skated in the Flames Development Camp that happened from July 10-16th at WinSport's Canada Olympic Park in Calgary, Alberta.

The Chesterfield, Michigan native played two seasons for the Lumberjacks from 2010-12 and recorded 48 points (16 goals and 32 assists) in 97 games played. The forward will be entering his sophomore season at Michigan State University in the fall.

Rounding out the 2012 NHL Draft crop for the Lumberjacks, Jaycob Megna took part in the Anaheim Ducks Conditioning Camp that was held on July 5th, 6th, and 8th at The Rinks - Anaheim Ice in Anaheim, California. The Northbrook, Illinois native was selected by the Ducks in the seventh round at 210th overall in 2012.

During the 2010-11 season, Megna tallied 21 points (1 goal and 20 assists) in 61 games played for Muskegon. The defenseman will be entering his junior campaign at the University of Nebraska-Omaha this season.

In terms of the 2013 Lumberjacks NHL draft class, Connor Hurley had the chance to skate in the Buffalo Sabres Development Camp that was held from July 10-12th at the First Niagara Center in Buffalo, New York. The Eagan, Minnesota native was the highest Lumberjack to be drafted in the NHL Entry Draft as he was picked by the Sabres in the second round at 38th overall this past June.

Last season, Hurley played in 13 games with the Lumberjacks and accumulated nine points (one goal and eight assists) and will be playing for Muskegon this upcoming season. The forward will then be attending the University of Notre Dame following the 2013-14 season with the Lumberjacks.

Coincidentally, three Lumberjacks alums in John Keeney, Ryan Misiak, and Travis Walsh were also invited to skate in respective development camps.

Keeney, the Lake Arrowhead, California native, was invited to the Dallas Stars Development Camp that took place from July 4-10th at the Dr. Pepper Arena in Frisco, Texas. During the 2011-12 season, Keeney totaled eight wins with Muskegon including two shutouts. The goaltender is heading into his sophomore season with the University of Alaska-Fairbanks.

Misiak, the Shelby Township, Michigan native, was invited to the New Jersey Devils Development Camp that was held from July 15-19th at the AmeriHealth Pavilion in Newark, New Jersey. In his only season with Muskegon, Misiak led the team with 63 points (16 goals and 47 assists) in 63 games played during the 2010-11 season. The forward will be entering his junior season at Mercyhurst University this fall.

Walsh, the Lansing, Michigan native, was invited to head out to the Washington Capitals Development Camp along with Koudys. In his two seasons with the Lumberjacks from 2010-12, Walsh registered 36 points (5 goals and 31 assists) in 118 games played. The defenseman will be entering his sophomore campaign at Michigan State University in the fall.

All but two National Hockey League teams (Colorado and St. Louis) were able to hold some sort of development camp in July.

The Lumberjacks will begin their 2013-14 regular season campaign on Saturday, September 21st in Green Bay against the Gamblers at 8:05 pm with their home opener slated for the following weekend on Saturday, September 28th against the Indiana Ice at 7:15 pm.
