Kansas City Mavericks News Release

ALLEN, Texas - The Missouri Mavericks peppered the Allen Americans with 49 shots on Saturday night but surrendered six goals in a 6-3 loss to open their season. The Mavericks fell in Head Coach John-Scott Dickson's debut and moved to 0-1-0 on the season.

After the pregame ceremonies concluded the Americans grabbed control of play early on. Allen registered the first six shots of the game but Josh Robinson, reigning ECHL Goalie of the Year, turned in several sparkling saves to keep Missouri on even footing. With Allen on the power play, though, Greger Hansen tapped home a backdoor feed from Eric Roy to lift the Americans to the early 1-0 lead. The Mavericks fell into a shorthanded situation, again, shortly after Hansen's goal, but generated the best scoring chance of those two minutes when Justin Selman was awarded a penalty shot. His wrist shot from low on the left wing was snared by Americans goalie Riley Gill and Allen preserved its lead. Robinson turned away a chance by Costello with just under 18 seconds left to keep Missouri within striking distance headed into the second period. It was one of 17 saves in the period for Robinson.

Momentum early in the second period escaped the Mavericks as a defensive zone turnover led to Allen's second goal of the game. Chris Crane jabbed a shot past Robinson from low on the left wing for his first goal of the season at 3:22 of the second. Defenseman Sam Noreau gave Missouri some of the momentum it was looking for thanks to a scrap with Kyle Neuber and it paid off down the line. Just after an Allen penalty expired, Radoslav Illo made a mad dash down the left wing, cut across the crease and slipped the puck past Gill to bring the Mavericks within one. Darren Nowick and Bryce Aneloski assisted on Illo's goal at 10:23. Just over a minute later, though, Kale Kerbashian put a wrist shot from the slot past Robinson and restored Allen's two-goal lead. Despite some late chances for the Mavericks, they couldn't close the gap before the final stanza.

The Mavericks' road to a comeback grew longer instead of shorter just 60 seconds into the third period when Chad Costello beat Robinson for a 4-1 Allen lead. The Mavericks began to claw back, however, thanks to back-to-back goals by Dane Fox and Illo. Fox's first of the season came on a delayed penalty at 11:15 and Illo followed up 1:22 later with his second of the night. Despite a barrage of 19 shots in the period, the Mavericks could only get the pair past Gill and the comeback never materialized. Allen added late goals by Roy (14:15) and Kerbashian (17:49) to salt away the win.

Robinson took the loss with a 33-save effort while Gill turned away 44 in the win. Missouri ended the night 0-for-5 on the power play and 3-for-4 on the penalty kill.
