Tampa Falls to Dunedin in 2nd-Half Opener

TAMPA, Fla. - The Tampa Yankees (0-1, 42-28) opened the second-half of the Florida State League schedule with a series-opening loss, 6-1, to the Dunedin Blue Jays (1-0, 34-36) on Thursday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
Jorge Mateo celebrated his 21st birthday with a multi-hit night, going 2-for-4 with his 33rd RBI and his 26th stolen base.
LHP James Reeves (L, 2-1) shouldered the loss in his fourth start, allowing two earned runs on four hits in four and a third innings. The 23-year-old walked one, struck out five and threw 46 of his 77 pitches for strikes.
Dunedin broke a scoreless tie in the third with a pair of two-out hits. Richard Urena lined a single to left and tried to steal second, but ended up in a pickle. A wild throw allowed Urena to safely retreat to first before successfully stealing second base on the next pitch. Emilio Guerrero then lined an RBI double to the left field corner.
Reeves left after allowing a one-out double by Aaron Attaway in the fifth. RHP Jordan Foley entered surrendered two walks, loading the bases. Foley then hit Ryan McBroom with a pitch, forcing home a run for a 2-0 Blue Jay lead.
RHP Sean Reid-Foley (W, 2-0) tossed six shutout frames for Dunedin, scattering three hits while striking out three and not allowing a walk.
Dunedin threw a pair of Major League relievers on rehab assignments in relief of Reid-Foley. LHP Franklin Morales worked around a hit and a walk to pitch a scoreless seventh before Tampa scored off LHP Brett Cecil in the eighth.
Wes Wilson led off and smacked a first-pitch double over the head of L.B. Dantzler in left. Devyn Bolasky flew out to deep right field, allowing Wilson to tag to third. Mateo then legged out an infield single to second, scoring Wilson.
The Blue Jays rallied for insurance in the ninth off RHP Gabriel Encinas. The first two batters reached and Attaway laid down a sacrifice bunt. Encinas fielded the ball and made an errant throw to second, allowing a run to score. A pair of wild pitches and an RBI singled gave Dunedin a 6-1 lead before Encinas ended the inning with back-to-back strikeouts.
LHP Jose Fernandez tossed a 1-2-3 ninth to close the game for Dunedin.
Mateo and Wilson (2-for-3, 2B, R) tallied four of the six Tampa hits. Abiatal Avelino (1-for-4) has hit safely in five-straight games. RHP Angel Rincon tossed two scoreless relief innings, walking one and striking out two without allowing a hit.
The series continues on Friday at 7:00 p.m. with LHP Ian Clarkin (5-6, 3.30 ERA) slated to start for Tampa against RHP Francisco Rios (3-3, 2.38 ERA) for Dunedin.
