Tacoma Takes Down River Cats at Home

Sacramento River Cats News Release

West Sacramento, CA - The Sacramento River Cats (30-44) managed just five hits in their game Wednesday night against the Tacoma Rainiers (40-32), but unlike Tuesday night, were unable to make their hits count in a 5-2 loss.

In their first meeting against Tacoma's starter Joe Weiland earlier this season, the River Cats had no trouble getting to him early, shredding the right-hander for seven runs in just 1.2 innings to open the game. Tonight, however, Sacramento could only scrape across two runs in nine innings on five hits. The offense has been relatively quiet all month, and have just nine hits in this series.

Sacramento went with left-hander Ty Blach, who was aiming to pick up his team-best seventh win this year. "The Preacher" set down six of the first seven Tacoma hitters he faced, but toiled to get through the next three innings. From the second inning on, the Rainiers racked up nine hits (four for extra bases) while scoring five runs. The long ball has hurt Blach of late and did so again tonight. Mike Zunino's home run in Blach's last inning was the sixth that the lefty has surrendered in his last 23.2 innings.

The River Cats answered in their half of the fifth on second baseman Juan Ciriaco's second home run of the season. With the home run, Sacramento has now homered in six straight games, their longest streak of the season. Previously, the longest streak was five (4/19-23). Sacramento threatened later in the same inning, loading the bases for left fielder Austin Slater. Slater drove in Rando Moreno with a single to deep shortstop, but that was it for the River Cats as Miguel Olivo grounded into a bases-loaded, inning-ending double play.

San Francisco Giants veteran Sergio Romo made his first rehab appearance with Sacramento since May 27, throwing a perfect seventh inning. The crafty right-hander needed just 12 pitches (seven strikes) to retire the side and struck out one. Romo has been on the disabled list for the San Francisco Giants since May 15.

Manager Jose Alguacil provided the River Cats with some late inning-drama, protesting an out call made against Ryan Lollis. Lollis was ruled out for having failed to re-touch second base on his way back to first. Alguacil, who was ejected by third base umpire Anthony Johnson, expressed his disagreement by taking second base and throwing it toward left field before sauntering to the home clubhouse.

Game three of this series will feature left-hander Adalberto Mejia (1-0, 0.00), who will be making his second start for Sacramento. The 10th ranked Giants prospect went seven scoreless innings in his debut, striking out eight El Paso hitters. On the hill for Tacoma will be newly acquired lefty Zach Lee (7-5, 4.89 with OKC). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. and the game can be heard live online at rivercats.com and on the air at ESPN 1320.
