Tacoma Rainiers News Release
EL PASO, Texas - Four errors were enough to sink the Tacoma Rainiers (66-47) in a 7-5 loss to the El Paso Chihuahuas (63-51) on Friday night at Southwest University Park.
Five Rainiers players, including second baseman Mike Freeman, catcher Rob Brantly, and right fielder Stefen Romero, all recorded multiple hits on the night. Romero sent out his second home run of the series, and increased his team-best RBI total to 77.
Freeman sent out Carlos Pimentel's third pitch of the night for a solo home run, giving the Rainiers an early 1-0 lead over the Chihuahuas.
An RBI double from Hector Sanchez and a double play grounded into by Patrick Kivlehan in the bottom of the second put the Chihuahuas out in front 2-1.
Romero wasted no time putting the Rainiers back out in front 3-2 with a two-run home run in the top of the third. It was Romero's second home run in as many games, and his 17th of the season.
Tacoma scored twice more on the night, plating a pair of runs in the top of the sixth on an RBI double from center fielder James Ramsey and an RBI single from Freeman. However, the Chihuahuas would go on to score five runs between the fifth and eighth innings, creating the final margin of 7-5.
Rainiers starting pitcher Jarrett Grube worked 3.0 innings and allowed two runs on four hits while striking out three. Donn Roach took the loss after allowing four runs, all unearned, over 3.1 innings of relief work.
Tacoma right-hander Joe Wieland (10-5, 5.57) and El Paso righty Daniel McCutchen (9-7, 6.18) will face off as the Rainiers and Chihuahuas conclude their series tomorrow, Saturday, August 6. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. PT.
