T-Yanks Fall to D-Jays in Extras, 6-5

TAMPA, Fla. -- The Tampa Yankees (1-2, 43-29) squandered a late lead and lost in 12 innings, 6-5, to the Dunedin Blue Jays (2-1, 35-37) on Saturday night at George M Steinbrenner Field. Dunedin captured the series, taking two out of three.

The Blue Jays jumped ahead in the first with a pair of runs. Emilio Guerrero reached on a fielder's choice and Ryan McBroom legged out an infield single, placing two on with two out. L.B. Dantzler followed by lining a two-run double into the right-field corner.

Tampa responded with run in the bottom of the first. Devyn Bolasky reached on an error by Richard Urena at shortstop. Austin Aune sliced a double down the left field line, scoring Bolasky and cutting the deficit in half.

Will Carter followed the first by facing one batter over the minimum throughout the rest of his start. The right-hander held Dunedin to two earned runs on five hits in a career-high seven innings pitched. Carter walked one, struck out five and threw 52 of his 82 pitches for strikes.

The Yankees took the lead against RHP Justin Shafer in the sixth. Bolasky and Thairo Estrada each singled and advanced on a slow-rolling groundout to shortstop by Aune. A wild pitch allowed Bolasky to cross the plate, tying the game. Estrada scored the go-ahead run on a fielder's choice grounder by Abiatal Avelino.

Tampa added insurance off Shafer in the seventh. Wes Wilson walked and advanced to third on a two-out double by Bolasky. Estrade followed up with a two-run double down the left-field line, giving the Yankees a 5-2 lead.

Shafer allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits in six and two-third innings. The righty walked two, struck out four and threw 62 of 99 pitches for strikes.

RHP Dillon McNamara (BS, 3) relieved Carter in the eighth and ran into trouble. Jonathan Davis doubled and Urena walked, bring the tying run to the plate. Guerrero smashed a three-run homer over the left-field wall, tying the game at 5-5.

LHP Jonny Drozd (1.0IP, 2H, 2BB, 1K) stranded a pair of base runners in ninth. RHP Willie Gabay (2.0IP, 2K) escaped a threat in the 10th and pitched a 1-2-3 11th in his debut with Tampa.

The game remained tied into the 12th and RHP Angel Rincon (L, 0-2) entered as the fifth pitcher for Tampa. After two quick outs, Guerrero lined his second homer of the game over the wall in left-center, giving the Blue Jays a 6-5 lead.

LHP Alonzo Gonzalez (2H, 2BB, 5K) held the Yankees scoreless in two and a third innings. RHP Carlos Ramirez (W, 3-0) earned the win with three shutout relief innings, allowing a pair of hits while striking out five.

Bolasky (3-for-6, 2B, 3R) and Zack Zehner (3-for-5, SB, CS) collected three hits apiece. Estrada (2-for-4, 2B, BB, 2RBI, R, sac-bunt) reached base three times. Aune (2-for-5, 2B, BB, RBI) recorded his 32nd RBI.

Up next, the home-stand continues for Tampa with a series against the Brevard County Manatees beginning on Sunday at 5:00 p.m. LHP Josh Rogers (4-3, 3.75 ERA) is slated to start for the Yankees against RHP Eric Hanhold (2-8, 4.68 ERA) for the Manatees.
