Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Kent, WA. - The Seattle Thunderbirds live to see another day.

The hometown TBirds scored six unanswered goals to beat the Brandon Wheat Kings 6-1 Wednesday night to stave off elimination in the best of seven Western Hockey League Championship Series.

Brandon still leads the series three games to one, with game five set for Friday night in Seattle.

Alexander True scored twice and set up another for the Thunderbirds, who had lost three straight overtime decisions to the Wheat Kings.

Ryan Gropp also scored two for the winners, while Ethan Bear and Donovan Neuls rounded out the scoring for the T-Birds, who are making their first appearance in the WHL Final since 1997.

Jayce Hawryluk, on the powerplay, with just over two minutes remaining in the third, completed the scoring in this one as Seattle prevented the Wheat Kings from clinching their first League Title in twenty years.

"Their backs were against the wall and they just came out and played hard," Brandon's Tim McGauley told CKLQ's Bruce Luebke. "We didn't match their intensity....we have to be better."

"I think we just have to turn the page, regroup and be ready for Friday," said Brandon captain Macoy Erkamps.

A win on Friday will send the Wheat Kings to the MasterCard Memorial Cup in Red Deer.

However, a Seattle win and the two teams will return to western Manitoba for game six Sunday night at Westman Communications Group Place.
