Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
PAWTUCKET, R.I. - Ryan Court and Bryce Brentz blasted solo home runs, but the Syracuse Chiefs launched four long balls of their own in a 10-2 win over the Pawtucket Red Sox on Tuesday night in the series opener at McCoy Stadium.
Syracuse (40-67) received three of the home runs from first baseman and No. 3 hitter Neftail Soto, and the Chiefs limited Pawtucket (54-54) to just five hits. The PawSox had won 15 of their last 16 games against Syracuse this season.
Rehabbing starter Roenis Elias (L, 0-2) made his second rehab appearance with the PawSox and logged five innings, totaling 80 pitches, in which he ceded seven runs on eight hits and a pair of walks to go along with three strikeouts. Elias sat comfortably in the low 90s with his fastball and buzzed through a 1-2-3 inning on 10 pitches to begin his evening.
Pawtucket left-hander Williams Jerez, the former second-round pick who was promoted from Double-A Portland earlier Tuesday, added two shutout innings of one-hit ball out of the bullpen and routinely touched 97 MPH with his fastball.
Syracuse starter Esmil Rogers (W, 1-0), meanwhile, made his season debut with the Chiefs after signing with the Nationals and spun five shutout stanzas with five strikeouts. Four more Syracuse relievers combined to quiet the PawSox and stamp the victory.
The Chiefs started the scoring in the second inning with an RBI single from third baseman and former Red Sox farmhand Michael Almanzar.
Syracuse stretched its lead to 3-0 in the third on the first home run from Soto. In the fourth, leadoff man Zach Collier yanked a three-run shot to right field to double the lead to 6-0. Soto later led off the fifth by smashing a solo rocket to left.
Soto hit his third home run of the ninth in the sixth when he teed off on a three-run job to center to extend the margin to 10-0.
Court ripped a solo homer to left field with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to get Pawtucket on the board, and Brentz led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a majestic solo homer to left-center - his 22nd of the season.
The PawSox continue their three-game series against Syracuse on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. PawSox left-hander Jalen Beeks (4-4, 2.89) is scheduled to oppose Chiefs right-hander John Simms (0-1, 10.80). Radio coverage on WHJJ (920 AM) and throughout the PawSox Radio Network begins with the PawSox Pre-Game Show at 6:35 p.m.
