Syracuse Mets News Release
Syracuse, N.Y. - The Syracuse Chiefs, Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, fell 4-0 in game one of their four game series with the Durham Bulls Friday night at Alliance Bank Stadium.
Syracuse pitching held Durham scoreless for the first seven innings. The Bulls (32-23) had a chance to score in the sixth, loading the bases for second baseman J.J. Furmaniak after walks to Ryan Shealy, Angel Chavez and Fernando Perez. Chiefs reliever Victor Garate got Furmaniak to ground out to second baseman Pete Orr to end the threat.
The Chiefs (32-22) had an opportunity of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Chris Duncan smashed a single to right field and Justin Maxwell walked, putting two runners aboard with two outs for designated hitter Devin Ivany. Ivany ended the inning by flying out to the left-fielder Perez.
Durham's dormant offense erupted for four runs in the eighth. The inning began on Desmond Jenning's groundball to shortstop Pedro Lopez. Lopez let the ball shoot through his legs and into left field, putting the leadoff man on for the Bulls. After Chiefs reliever Jason Bergmann surrendered a one-out walk to Perez, Furmaniak blasted a double to the right field gap. Jennings and Lopez came home for the first two runs of the game. Shortstop Elliot Johnson knocked in Furmaniak with an RBI double of his own, making it 3-0 Bulls. Durham added another run on Chavez's bases-loaded walk, putting the Bulls ahead for good 4-0.
Jeremy Hellickson, who leads the International League with eight wins, tossed six scoreless frames for the Bulls. He struck out four and walked five. Mike Ekstrom worked the seventh inning to pick up his second win of the season for Durham.
Chiefs lefthander Matt Chico gave up three hits in his 5 1/3 innings of work. He also struck out three and walked five.
The Chiefs will get another crack at the Bulls on Saturday. They'll send righthander Jeff Mandel (2-0, 1.93) to the hill. He'll be going up against Durham lefty Heath Phillips (4-4, 4.25). First pitch will be at 7:05.
