Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

The Swing of the Quad Cities won their second straight ballgame over the South Bend Silver Hawks, taking a 6-2 matinee on Wednesday afternoon at John O'Donnell Stadium. Brandon Buckman went 3-for-4 with a double while Mark Shorey and Christian Lopez each drove in two runs.

Quad Cities (25-20) improved to 11-3 in day games this season, including 3-0 on Wednesday afternoons. South Bend (20-23) was trailing by just one run late in the ballgame before the Swing pulled away with a big three-run bottom of the eighth.

The Swing took an early lead in the first, loading the bases with nobody out after a walk to Willian Sandoval and consecutive singles by Jared Schweitzer and Buckman. Shorey followed with a sacrifice fly to left that plated Sandoval for a 1-0 lead, but one batter later a double play ended the rally.

The lead swelled to 3-0 in the second inning. Chris Grossman led off the frame with a towering fly ball to left field that left the yard for his first longball of the season. Luke Gorsett followed by legging out a double to left, moved to third on a bounce-out, and scored when Lopez laced a line-drive single back up the middle.

That lead held until the top of the sixth when the Silver Hawks pulled to within a run. Gerrardo Parra bounced his second double of the game down the third base line to drive home a run with two outs. After moving to third on a wild pitch, Parra scored on a single by Yunesky Sanchez that cut the Swing lead to 3-2.

But Quad Cities pulled away in the bottom of the eighth. Buckman and Shorey opened the frame with back-to-back doubles to add a run, and Christian Reyes chipped in a groundball single through the middle for a 5-2 lead. Later in the frame Lopez added his second RBI-single of the game for the decisive 6-2 advantage.

Tyler Herron (3-4) tossed a season-high 5.2 innings to capture his third win in a row. The 20-year-old right-hander carried a one-hit shutout into the sixth before a pair of doubles turned into a pair of runs. He allowed two runs on three hits in all, adding four strikeouts and two walks to his final line.

Piggyback starter Brad Furnish (1) blanked the Silver Hawks over the final three innings to earn his first professional save. The southpaw out of Texas Christian University fanned two while allowing two hits and issuing one walk.

Jordan Norberto (1-1) suffered the loss in just his third start with South Bend, as the Swing knocked him around for three runs on six hits over four innings of work.
