Sweets Ink Nine 10-Day Contract Players for Beginning of 2016

WALLA WALLA, Wash- With the season on the horizon, the Walla Walla Sweets roster has been affected by an unusually high number of players headed to NCAA regionals. The team has signed a number of talented players to bolster the roster. The Sweets have signed three pitchers, three catchers, an infielder, and a pair of outfielders.

PITCHERS:

- -Ryan Kimball, a 6-foot 1-inch, 225-pound right handed pitcher, will join the Sweets from Walla Walla High School. He signed his letter of intent to play for WWCC on February 3, 2016.

- - Karver Pate, a 6-foot 1-inch, 205-pound left handed pitcher, just finished up his sophomore season at Columbia Basin College. He had nine appearances and four starts and in 29 innings, he accumulated a 3.74 ERA with 36 strikeouts and 13 walks.

- - Garrett Atkinson, a 6-foot 3-inch, 190-pound left handed pitcher, completed his junior season with Whitman on April 17. A lefty bullpen specialist, he finished with a record of 3-3.

CATCHERS:

- -Cole Taylor, a 5-foot 11-inch, 195-pound catcher, saw limited playing time for the Pac-12 champion Utah Utes. In 18 games, he saw the starting lineup three times and picked up two hits in 17 at-bats for a .184 batting average.

- - Branden Williams just finished his sophomore season with the Irvine Valley Lasers and has committed to transfer to UC-Riverside. One of the best catch-and-throw defenders in the California JUCO circuit, he will be a valuable defensive addition.

- -Colby Watilo, a 5-foot 11-inch, 180-pound catcher, comes home to the Sweets as he is a native of Walla Walla from WWHS. He recently completed his freshman season at George Fox.

INFIELDER:

- -Anthony Acosta, a 5-foot 10-inch, 180-pound shortstop and right handed pitcher, comes to the Sweets from Chaminade, where manager Frank Mutz coaches during the year. He was a Perfect Game Underclass Honorable Mention in 2015.

OUTFIELDERS:

- - Chris McCready, a 6-foot, 185-pound outfielder, makes his second trip to Walla Walla in as many seasons. He hit .322 in 38 games with 5 home runs and 26 RBIs for the College of the Canyons this spring.

- -Austin Kopacz, an outfielder, comes to the Sweets for the 2016 season out of Briar Cliff University in Iowa. He hit .331 in 50 games last season with eight home runs and 48 RBIs. He also slugged .566 with 23 extra base hits. His brother, Chance, was a Sweets outfielder in 2011-12.

"I applaud [general manager] Katie [Biagi] and [manager] Frank [Mutz] for their quick work in finding talent in a short period of time," said Sweets president Zachary Fraser. "These players provide depth during an important stretch of the early season."

The Walla Walla Sweets will open the 2016 season presented by Columbia REA, on June 3 against the Victoria HarbourCats. Season tickets and mini-plans are on sale now.
