Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees News Release

Syracuse, NY - Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (4-6) had its season long wining streak snapped at three straight as the Syracuse Chiefs (3-7) used a four run, five hit top of the sixth inning to break open a close game to go on and win by a 7-2 final in the wrap up game of a quick two game "home" series for the Yankees at Alliance Bank Stadium in Syracuse.

Syracuse got on the board in the top half of the second inning on the fifth homer of the season from Tyler Moore. Moore's solo shot leading off the inning sailed over the wall in right center field off SWB starter Ramon Ortiz, who was officially making his first start of the season for the Yankees. Ortiz started for the Yankees on Tuesday night in Syracuse but since the game was suspended the stats will not become official until the game is completed, which is slated for July 12th. The Chiefs added a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning on a Jhonatan Soloano sacrifice fly and an RBI single from Carlos Rivero to push the Syracuse lead to 3-0.

Mitch Atkins who suffered the same fate as Ortiz on Tuesday night with the suspended game will have his stats sit in limbo as well. It was the second start of the season for Atkins who got the ball opening day for the Chiefs against Rochester at Alliance Bank Stadium. Atkins retired the first six SWB hitters he faced before allowing a lead off walk to Colin Curtis in the third. The Yankees couldn't muster any run producing offense against Atkins until the bottom of the fifth inning. With two down Craig Tatum singled inside the bag at first base and score on Ray Kruml's gap double to left center, cutting the Syracuse lead to 3-1.

The Chiefs put some distance between themselves and the Yankees in the top of the sixth inning scoring four runs off reliever Jason Bulger who came in replacing Ortiz. In 5.0 innings on the day, the Yankees starter allowed three runs on five hits with one walk and walk strikeout. Syracuse sent nine men to the plate in Bulger's first and only inning of work scoring four runs to open up a 7-1 lead over the Yankees. Mark Teahen, who had a four hit game for the Chiefs doubled home Bryce Harper for a 4-1 lead. The second of three hits for Rivero scored Teahen and the lead was 5-1 Syracuse. Jarrett Hoffpauir followed with the fourth double of the inning scoring Rivero and the Chiefs led 6-1. Seth Bynum got the final run home in the inning with a one out RBI single scoring Hoffpauir to extend the lead to 7-1.

Atkins last through the seventh inning limiting the Yankees to the lone tally in the fifth. The right hander allowed one run on three hits with two walks and four strikeouts in his 7.0 innings of work. SWB picked up a final run in the ninth off Austin Bibens-Dirkx on Curtis' RBI single to right scoring Steve Pearce who lead off the inning with a single and moved to third on a two out double by Brandon Laird.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Rochester Red Wings open up a four game series Monday night at Frontier Field in Rochester, New York against the Red Wings with a 7:05 PM first pitch. Right hander Dellin Betances (0-1, 10.80 ERA) makes the start for the Yankees, while the Rochester will send lefty Scott Diamond (2-0, 0.00 ERA) to the mound.
