SwampDogs Rally Falls Short

June 16, 2016 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The SwamDogs rally was 90 feet away in the eighth inning from tying the game, but couldn't come all the way back from a six run deficit in a 6-5 loss to the Wilmington Sharks.

The Sharks pushed across three runs in the third inning on the strength of two doubles. In the bottom half of the inning, league rules on the vicinity of lightning in the area halted play before rain delayed the game by an hour and a half.

The SwampDogs went to the bullpen after the delay, and the Sharks were able to string together a run in each of the fifth, sixth, and seventh to stretch the lead to sixth.

The weather didn't knock Sharks' starter Mike Castellani out of the game as he held the SwampDogs to just one hit through the first six innings.

However, Pat Donnelly (Lehigh) and Hunter Dolshun (UMBC) roped singles off of the lefty before Jacob Greco (Upper Iowa) belted a three run homer to cut the deficit in half.

The SwampDogs tallied a pair of runs against reliever Ethan Wortkoetter (Presbyterian) in the eighth with three straight hits prior to a Donnelly double before leaving the tying run on third.

Steven Powels (Saint Joseph's) escaped the eighth inning jam for the Sharks before retiring the SwampDogs in order in the ninth for the three out save, his third of the year. The SwampDogs return home Thursday night to host the Edenton Steamers for Military Appreciation Night presented by Lee Hyundai at 7:05pm.
