March 21, 2017 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release

Fayetteville, N.C.-The Fayetteville SwampDogs have signed two University of New Orleans Privateers of the Southland Conference in junior infielder/outfielder Jay Robinson (Tallahassee, Fla.) and junior right-handed pitcher Will Griffin (Kennesaw, Ga.).

Robinson is starting the 2017 season off hot, hitting .364 in eight games with four RBIs. He thrived during his sophomore campaign in 2016, starting in 56 games and finished second on the UNO squad with a .322 batting average. The Tallahassee native also recorded eight doubles, along with posting 16 multi-hit games.

"Jay gives us great experience in the OF as he will be the oldest of the group and is someone who has proven success at the D1 level," said SwampDogs head coach Matt Hollod.

As a freshman, Robinson saw action in 35 contests with 27 starts in his first spring with the Privateers. He hit for a .228 average with 21 hits in 98 plate appearances with 10 RBIs. The talented middle infielder also tallied three doubles and scored 10 runs.

Griffin enters his first season with New Orleans as a transfer from Georgia Highland College after being named to the GCAA All-Conference first team at the conclusion of his sophomore year. He made 21 appearances on the mound with a 2-0 record and 14 saves. He fanned 35 batters while only allowing eight free passes in 22.2 innings of work.

In his freshman season, Griffin made the second-most appearances in the NJCAA with 34 trips to the mound, posting a 2-1 record with a 1.40 ERA in 38.2 innings pitched with 38 strikeouts in that span.

"Will has had a lot of success in the past closing out games," said Hollod. "He's competing for a closing role this year at New Orleans and I see Will playing a key role in the back end of our bullpen."

Griffin has appeared in seven games in 2017 striking out five in nine innings of work earning a 1-0 record. His most notable performance in the early 2017 campaign came in the Privateer's upset victory over the second-ranked LSU Tigers (Feb. 21) where he went four innings, allowing only one earned run on four hits and picked up his first career win on the mound.

Be sure to stay tuned during the remainder of the off-season as we continue to periodically announce our new members of the 2017 Fayetteville SwampDogs!
