Suns Top Braves 4-3 in 10 Innings

PEARL, Miss. - The Jacksonville Suns (21-24) defeated the Mississippi Braves (20-26) by a 4-3 score at Trustmark Park in the first game of the five game series on Wednesday night.

The Suns broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the tenth inning with a two-out Chris Curley RBI single, and added another run to earn the win. Suns reliever Tyler Higgins (2-1) did allow a run to the M-Braves in the bottom of the tenth, but got the final out for the victory. Braves reliever Madison Younginer (0-1) took the loss by allowing the two Suns runs in the tenth.

Jacksonville had the early advantage in the top of the third when J.T. Riddle scored Yefri Perez on an RBI double to give the Suns a 1-0 lead. The Braves quickly tied the game when their starting pitcher Andrew Thurman hit an RBI single to even the score at one.

Mississippi's Jacob Schrader led off the bottom of the fifth with a double/error on the left fielder Austin Dean to reach third base, and was quickly brought home by Johan Camargo on a sacrifice fly to give Mississippi a 2-1 lead. Suns starter Chris Mazza pitched five innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits with no walks and six strikeouts.

The Braves enjoyed their 2-1 lead until the top of the eighth. Peter Mooney broke out of an 0-for-14 stretch at the plate with a two-out game-tying single off Braves reliever Jason Hursh. Mississippi began the bottom of the ninth with a double from Mel Rojas, Jr., and he was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. The Suns got the final two outs with Higgins on the mound to send the game to the tenth.

Riddle led off the inning with a single, and groundouts to first moved him to third base with two outs. There Curley delivered with his RBI single to give Jacksonville a 3-2 lead. The Suns later loaded the bases in the inning, and Jeremias Pineda drew a bases-loaded walk to score Curley and put the lead at 4-2. Mississippi added a run in the bottom of the tenth when Willians Astudillo hit an RBI single, but Higgins forced Camargo to pop out to the catcher in foul ground to end the game.

The Suns and Braves will continue their series with the second game of the five-game set at Trustmark Park tomorrow night at 8 p.m. ET. The Suns will start right-hander Jake Esch (5-4, 4.63 ERA) against Mississippi right-hander Chris Ellis (6-1, 2.89 ERA).
