Hagerstown Suns News Release

Powered by three home runs, the Hagerstown Suns (4-5) stomped the Delmarva Shorebids (6-3) by a score of 15-2 in the first game of a four-game series at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium in Salisbury, MD on Friday.

The Suns got the scoring going early, as left-fielder JP Ramirez doubled to left field and eventually scored on a bloop single by DH Brett Newsome in the top of the second inning. Ramirez kept things going in the third inning, capping a three-run, four-hit top of the third with his second double of the game to give the Suns a 4-0 lead. Second baseman Jeff Kobernus, shortstop Francisco Soriano and right fielder Destin Hood also hat hits in the inning. Hagerstown extended the lead to 5-0 with a single run on two hits, including a single by Ramirez, before the Shorebirds got on the board.

Suns starting pitcher Jack McGeary (1-0) pitched very well, allowing just four hits in six innings of work, and did not surrender a run until the bottom of the fifth inning. With one out in the bottom of the fifth inning, McGeary hit Delmarva second baseman Gary Helmick with a pitch and proceeded to surrender back-to-back singles, scoring Helmick.

Any thoughts of a Delmarva comeback were scrapped in the top of the sixth inning, however as the Suns exploded for five runs, giving Hagerstown a 10-1 lead. After Newsome was hit by a curvbell from reliever Nathan Moreau, catcher Sandy Leon doubled to left field and Soriano singled to center, driving in Newsome. With Leon and Soriano on base, third baseman Steven Souza hit a towering home run to left field. It was Souza's first home run of the season. The Suns tacked on one more run in the top of the sixth inning, widening the gap to 10-1.

After a solo homerun in the bottom of the sixth inning for Delmarva, the Suns offense got back to work in the top of the seventh. Newsome doubled with one out in the seventh and eventually scored on a single to right field by Kobernus. Then, in the top of the eighth inning, the Suns got their second home run of the game as Ramirez hit a two-run shot to right field for his first homer of the season. The Suns entered the game with just one home run on the season, but picked up two homers in the first eight innings on Friday.

However, the Suns attack was not finished as with two outs and one on in the top of the ninth inning, Souza hit his second home run of the game on a line-drive to left-center field, giving the Suns a 15-2 lead.

Hagerstown had a season high 19 hits in the game, including nine extra-base hits.

McGeary picked up the win by pitching six innings and allowing just two runs on four hits and striking out three Shorebirds. Paul Applebee earned his first save of the season, completing the final three innings without surrendering a base hit or a walk.

The Suns and Shorebirds will play the second game of their four-game series on Saturday, April 17 at 7:05 p.m. Hagerstown will return to Municipal Stadium on Saturday, April 24 with a 6:35 p.m. game against the Shorebirds. Click here to purchase tickets online.
