Hagerstown Suns News Release

ROME, G.A. - The Hagerstown Suns (18-12) concluded a rain-shortened three game series against the Rome Braves (18-12) on Tuesday afternoon by splitting a double-header. Each team collected a 1-0 victory on Tuesday, with Hagerstown getting the series win 2-1.

The lone run scored in game one of the double-header came in the top of the third. Left fielder Will Piwnica-Worms began the frame for the Suns by drawing a walk, the first of the game issued by Rome starter RHP Patrick Scoggin (2-3). With Piwnica-Worms at first, catcher Pedro Severino doubled on a line drive to center field, driving in Piwnica-Worms for what wound up being the winning run.

Three Hagerstown pitchers combined to record the team's fifth shutout of the year. RHP Ivan Pineyro (2-2) started for the Suns and got the win, pitching five innings and allowing four hits and one walk while striking out five. RHP Ronald Pena pitched one inning of relief, his first relief appearance this season, and RHP Robert Benincasa pitched a scoreless seventh to record his sixth save of the year. Scoggin suffered the loss for the Braves. He lasted five innings, surrendering just the one earned run on one hit and one walk while striking out one.

In game two the Braves collected their first run of the day in the bottom of the fifth. Designated hitter Carlos Franco began the frame by reaching on a throwing error by Suns 2B Tony Renda. Franco proceeded to steal second, and advanced to third when 3B Ronald Luna reached on a fielder's choice. With runners on the corners and none out, catcher Tyler Tewell singled to right, driving in Franco to break the scoreless tie.

That one run was enough for starting RHP Frank Lafreniere (3-0) to earn the win for Rome. He pitched five innings, giving up two hits and two walks while striking out four. Starting RHP Pedro Encarnacion (2-2) got tagged with the loss for Hagerstown, despite allowing just the one unearned run on two hits over five innings. RHP Shae Simmons pitched a scoreless seventh for his 10th save of the year.

The Suns next return home to begin a four-game series with the Delmarva Shorebirds on Thursday May 9. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm. Thursdays at Municipal Stadium are "Thirsty Thursdays" presented by Benny's Pub and Antietam Brewery. For tickets call 301-791-6266 or go online to hagerstownsuns.com.
