Suns run out of rallies in 5-4 loss

July 13, 2009 - South Atlantic League (SAL1) - Hagerstown Suns News Release

HAGERSTOWN, MD -- After mounting two-out rallies in three of the first four innings at Municipal Stadium on Monday night, the Hagerstown Suns (5-13) ran out of big hits, watching a 4-2 lead disappear into a 5-4 win for the visiting Greenville Drive (8-9).

The Suns fell to 0-5 at home for the second half of the South Atlantic League season, despite picking up a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Back-to-back doubles by first baseman Tyler Moore and shortstop Steven Souza gave Hagerstown its first of four two-out runs on the evening.

Greenville grabbed the lead from Suns starter Paul Demny in the top of the third, when Ryan Lavarnway crushed a ball towards the wall in right center that Hagerstown centerfielder kept in the park for a two-run double.

The Suns only had to wait through two outs in the bottom of the third to jump back ahead, with Souza coming through again for a high two-run homer to left field. It was the fourth round-tripper of the season for Souza, who went three-for-four on the night with three runs batted in.

Hagerstown doubled its lead the next inning, with leftfielder Robby Jacobsen reaching on a leadoff double, advancing to third on a groundout, and scoring on a two-out wild pitch.

With a 4-2 lead in the top of the fifth, Demny ran into trouble, allowing a Jeremy Hazelbaker RBI double to right, and leaving the game with runners at the corners and two outs. Reliever Justin Phillabaum (1-3) got the Suns out of the inning without further damage, but two innings later Phillabaum gave up the lead for good when Ryan Dent delivered with a two-run single up the middle to put Greenville ahead, 5-4.

The Hagerstown offense, which went dry over the final five innings of the game, could not muster another rally, and Chad Povich (1-0) picked up the win in his first appearance of the season for the Drive, with two innings of scoreless relief.

Hagerstown and Greenville will play the second game of their four-game series on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m., with gates opening at Municipal Stadium at 6:05 p.m.
