Hagerstown Suns News Release

Lakewood, NJ- The Hagerstown Suns (37-26) were stymied in game two of their four-game road set at FirstEnergy Park against the Lakewood BlueClaws (31-32) on Monday evening, losing 3-1. After dropping their Sunday series opener by a score of 5-4, the Suns were mired in a 9 inning scoreless drought going back to the 7th inning of game one, before scoring their only run of the contest in the 8th inning on Monday.

Suns RHP Taylor Jordan (6-3), the losing pitcher of record, tossed 5.0 innings and surrendered three earned runs on four hits, while walking a pair and striking out four.

The BlueClaws struck first with a run in the last of the 3rd inning after 2B Alan Schoenberger lead off with a double struck on a line into the right field corner. LF Zach Collier, with one out, deposited a ball in the same spot up the right field chalk and into the corner to put the 'Claws on top 1-0.

In the home half of the 5th inning, Lakewood tacked on two more runs when, with one out, Collier was hit by a pitch from Jordan to get on board. Collier would then steal his 20th base of the season to get into scoring position at second base. 1B Jim Murphy then went the opposite way into the right center field alley way with a jam shot two-base knock to plate Collier. With two outs and 3B Travis Mattair batting, a wild pitch from Jordan that ricocheted in front of home plate, off the catcher's mask of Suns C Cole Leonida, and then towards the on-deck circle of the third base side Hagerstown dugout. Murphy would score on the wild offering to give the BlueClaws a 3-0 lead.

Despite solid relief pitching from RHP Matt Swynenberg, who motored through a scoreless 6th and 7th frame, and RHP Sam Brown, who threw a scoreless 8th inning, the Suns would not produce run support until the 8th frame. After back-to-back singles from SS Blake Kelso up the middle and C David Freitas, who collected his second consecutive three-hit contest, DH Jason Martinson laid down a sacrifice bunt to put both in scoring position. RF Kevin Keyes then lifted an RBI sacrifice fly into right center field to culminate the lone Suns run of the ballgame.

RHP Juan Sosa (7 SV) earned his second consecutive save of the series and seventh of the season, pitching a perfect 9th inning.

After losing eight consecutive ballgames, Lakewood has now won three in a row after an extra inning victory over West Virginia in their previous series' finale and now two straight triumphs over the visiting Suns.

The BlueClaws will welcome the Suns for game three on Tuesday night for a 7:05pm first pitch. The radio flagship of the Hagerstown Suns, WJEJ AM 1240, will provide wall-to-wall radio coverage beginning with a 6:50pm Break Away 2 Sports Lounge Pre-game Show.
