Hagerstown Suns News Release

HAGERSTOWN, MD - The Hagerstown Suns (15-18) lost the first half of their doubleheader with the West Virginia Power (13-20) by a score of 9-4 on Friday. Game two of the twin bill was suspended in the top of the third inning with the Suns leading 3-0.

Jeff Mandel (2-2) started the opener for the Suns, and struggled early. Mandel allowed five runs on six hits in the bottom of the first inning, putting the Suns in a hole they never got out of. None of the six first inning hits for the Power were well-hit balls, and three of the six were singles, but still the Power racked up the runs.

Mandel lasted three and two thirds innings before giving way to Justin Phillabaum. Mandel took the loss for Hagerstown.

Even Anundsen (3-3) pitched well for West Virginia, allowing just one run in six innings of work. Anundsen walked just one and struck out three while allowing four hits and hitting three Suns hitters.

West Virginia scored again with one run in the third inning and three in the bottom of the fifth. Two of the runs in the fifth inning came on back-to-back home runs by Jonathan Lucroy and Steffan Wilson.

The Suns got one run in the top of the sixth inning, and three more in the seventh of a three-run home run by first baseman Bill Rhinehart. Rhinehart's sixth homer of the season plated Jake Smolinksi and Dan Lyons. Rhinehart leads the South Atlantic League with 34 RBI on the season.

Game two started off well for the Suns, as Hagerstown scored one run in the first inning and two more in the second before the rains prohibited the possibility of further play.

Lead-off hitter Brandon "Boomer" Whiting walked, stole second base and later scored in the top of the first inning to give the Suns the lead.

In the second, Trever Lawhorn and Travis Reagan singled and were driven in by Whiting and Lyons to give the Suns a 3-0 lead.

Bradley Meyers was pitching well for Hagerstown when the rains came. Meyers had allowed just one hit and zero runs in two innings of work.

The game will be picked up where it was suspended on Saturday, May 10th at 6:05 P.M. The game originally scheduled for May 10th will take place 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
