Suns Drop Opener to Crawdads

HAGERSTOWN, M.D. - The Hagerstown Suns (12-7, 50-35) saw a 3-1 lead disappear in the sixth inning as the Hickory Crawdads (12-6, 51-37) beat the Suns 4-3 Tuesday evening. The loss snapped Hagerstown's four-game winning streak at home and evened the season series between the two teams at four games apiece.
Hickory took the lead for good in the sixth. Left fielder Nick Williams started the inning off with a single. After 3B Nick Vickerson struck out, 1B Ronald Guzman drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Second baseman Ryan Rua then hit a three-run home run, his 26th of the season, to right-center field to turn a 3-1 deficit into a 4-3 lead which would end up being the final score.
The Crawdads took a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Catcher David Lyon led things off by getting hit by a pitch. Center fielder Lewis Brinson followed up with a walk. After SS Luis Marte struck out, Williams singled up the middle, bringing home Lyon and giving Hickory the lead.
The Suns struck back in their half of the third. With one out, CF Narciso Mesa reached on a fielder's choice. Second baseman Tony Renda then walked, which was followed up by a double steal, advancing Mesa to third and Renda to second. First baseman Estarlin Martinez doubled home both runners to make it 2-1.
The Suns plated another run in the fourth inning. Third baseman Khayyan Norfork started the frame with a single. Left fielder Will Piwnica-Worms followed up with a walk. After DH Matt Foat struck out, catcher Pedro Severino drove home Norfork drove in Norfork to extend Hagerstown's lead to 3-1 which would hold up until the sixth.
RHP Cody Kendall (2-2) earned the win in relief for the Crawdads. Kendall pitched three innings, allowing two hits and one walk while striking out one. RHP Pedro Encarnacion (6-5) suffered the loss for the Suns. Encarnacion worked six innings, allowing four earned runs on four hits and two walks while striking out seven.
The Suns and Crawdads will continue their series on Wednesday, July 10. RHP Ian Dickson (0-0) will get the starting nod for Hagerstown, making his second start of the season. LHP Andrew Faulkner (2-2) will take the mounds for Hickory, making his tenth start of the season. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
