Sundogs Drop Season Opener Despite Four Goals

Prescott Valley, AZ - The Arizona Sundogs opened their 2013-14 season against the Brampton Beast at the Powerade Center in front of 3,300 fans. Despite the exchange of goals the Sundogs were unable to regain their lead and lost 5-4.

The Sundogs struck first with a goal off the stick of Damian Surma and the assist from Team Captain, Jason Morgan. Less than three minutes later the Beast answered back with a pair of goals from Andrew Fournier and Brent Vandehogen .

The Beast continued to hold their lead heading into the second intermission despite the Sundogs' goals from Kevin Baker and a power play goal by Brodie Zuk . This was Zuk's first goal of his professional career and Morgan picked up his second point of the night with the assist on Baker's goal. Seconds prior to Baker's goal Vandehogen posted his second goal of the evening for the Beast, two minutes into the period and Calin Wild found the net with assistance from Rob Collins. Three minutes into the second frame and Sundogs' Morgan and Beast's Jamie VanderVeeken threw off their gloves and were each assessed a five minute fighting major.

With 64 seconds remaining in regulation Sundogs' Head Coach, Kevin Colley pulled their goalie for the man advantage, only for Brampton to score an empty netter on the power play, by Matt Caruana . Seconds after Sebastian Geoffrion answered back for Arizona with an unassisted goal closing their deficit.

Cam Lanigan took the loss for the Sundogs, with 16 saves. The Sundogs were 1-7 on the power play, while the Beast were 1-2. The Sundogs were outshot, 45-21. Both teams meet again Sunday afternoon at the Powerade Centre in Ontario, where the Sundogs look to even the series.
