Subway Super Series Wraps Tonight in Victoria
November 15, 2012 - Western Hockey League (WHL) News Release
Victoria, B.C. - The 2012 SUBWAY(r) Super Series concludes its 10th anniversary as Team WHL welcomes Russia for finale of the six-game series on Thursday night in Victoria, B.C. (7:00pm PST; Sportsnet).
Team WHL prevailed in a goaltender's duel on Wednesday night in Vancouver with Laurent Brossoit of the Edmonton Oil Kings earning a shutout in a 1-0 shootout victory over Russia in Game 5 of the series. The win gave the CHL a 3-2 record in the series and a 8-7 points edge.
Russia, meanwhile, got an outstanding goaltending performance from Saskatoon Blades' netminder Andrey Makarov, who stopped 35 shots through regulation play.
Team WHL will have a slightly different look for Thursday night's finale, with a few new faces inserted into the line-up, including top scorers Ty Rattie of the Portland Winterhawks and Kamloops Blazers' forwards JC Lipon and Colin Smith, who currently sit first and second in the WHL scoring race.
Also, due to injury, Edmonton Oil Kings' forward Travis Ewanyk will be unable to participate in game six of the Subway Super Series Thursday night in Victoria. To fill the roster vacancy Prince Albert Raiders' Mark McNeill, who played for Team WHL Wednesday night in Vancouver, will again suit up for Team WHL in the series finale.
Meanwhile, the hometown Victoria Royals will be represented by forward Steve Hodges, a Florida Panthers prospect, and assistant coach Dave Lowry, who is the Royals' head coach. Seattle Thunderbirds' forward Alex Delnov will suit up for the Russians.
A win in regulation play awards three points, a shoot-out win is two points and a shoot-out loss is one. Therefor a regulation win for either team on Thursday night would lead to the series victory. Should Russia win in a shoot-out the Subway Super Series would be tied, then a series-deciding shoot-out would determine the overall winner.
