Willmar Stingers News Release
WILLMAR, Minn. - Joe Vranesic (Kent State) and Stone Kelly (Georgia Gwinnett) led the Stingers to a 6-2 win Sunday night to close out the home slate of the regular season.
They were aided by a trio of Stingers at the plate that all drove in two runs. Nolan Bumstead (CS-Northridge), Danny Rodriguez (Bethune-Cookman) and Luke Becker (Kentucky) combined to drive in the six runs of support for Vranesic and Kelly.
Rodriguez hit his second home run in as many days to bring in two runs for the Stingers in the sixth. It was his eighth of the year.
Becker hit a triple and a single to drive in his two RBIs of the day. Bumstead's sacrifice fly preceded Rodriguez's home run in the sixth and he also tacked on an RBI single the next inning.
Joe Vranesic struck out six Huskies and gave up only four hits in his 5.1 inning outing. All four hits were singles.
With the Stingers trailing 1-0 in the top of the sixth inning, Stone Kelly came in to relieve Vranesic with the bases loaded and only one out. He pitched toward a fly ball and struck out the next batter to escape the jam unharmed.
He then retired the Huskies in order in both the seventh and eighth innings, leading into a one-run ninth that kept the Stingers lead intact.
Kelly earned his second victory of the season. He finished with 3.2 innings and six strikeouts.
