Stratospheric Seventh Blasts First-Place Revs Past 'Fish

(York, Pa.) - The York Revolution broke out for six runs in the seventh inning to soar past the Bridgeport Bluefish 6-4 on Friday night at PeoplesBank Park. With their 17th comeback win of the season, the Revs (31-23) build their Freedom Division lead to three full games over Sugar Land, who lost at New Britain, with 16 to go in the first half. York also improves to 7-1 on the year over the Bluefish (22-32).

The win also marked a milestone for manager Mark Mason, who picked up his 238th victory as manager of the Revolution, surpassing his predecessor Andy Etchebarren for most wins in franchise history.

The Revs hit the ball hard through the first six innings but still found themselves down 4-0 in the bottom of the seventh. Alfredo Marte led off with a single, then after a fielder's choice and two more singles, Travis Witherspoon came up with the bases loaded. In his first game since being acquired yesterday in a trade with Lancaster, Witherspoon clanged one off the Arch Nemesis in left to plate two, sliding into second ahead of the throw.

Isaias Tejeda followed with an RBI groundout to cut the deficit to one, then Joel Guzman lined a two-out single into right to plate Witherspoon and tie it. On the very next pitch, Telvin Nash blasted a towering home run to left center field to give the home side a sudden 6-4 lead.

The bullpen held from there, as Luis Perdomo and Ricardo Gomez combined for a scoreless eighth, and Mike DeMark worked out of trouble for his 18th save to send the 3,522 in attendance home more than satisfied.

Perdomo (1-1) picked up the win after getting three outs between the seventh and eighth innings. Scott Shuman (1-3) took the loss for Bridgeport after allowing the tying and go-ahead runs to score.

York starter James Simmons dueled Bridgeport lefty Jimmy Patterson all night, but the Bluefish broke through in the top of the fourth inning when Endy Chavez poked a solo home run over the big wall in right.

Anthony Giansanti added to the lead in the sixth with a solo homer of his own to left. Then in the seventh, Luis Rodriguez and Jonathan Galvez sent back-to-back shots into the stands to give Bridgeport a 4-0 lead on four solo home runs.

York had its chances early in the ballgame but was thwarted by strong Bluefish defense. With two on and one out in the third, Tejeda tagged a ball toward left field, but Bridgeport third baseman Josh Vitters made a leaping catch and doubled off the runner on second to end the threat. Vitters again thwarted a Revs rally in the sixth, making a diving stop on an Andres Perez grounder down the line for the out.

Witherspoon went 2-for-4 in his team debut, while Tejeda extended his season-long hitting streak to 15 games with a 2-for-4 night of his own.

Nash, Josh Wilson, and Michael Rockett also had two hits on a night when York tallied 14 base knocks.

Chavez paced the Bluefish attack, going 2-for-4 with the first solo homer.

Both starters allowed an identical four runs in 6.1 innings, Simmons on five hits and Patterson on 12.

Notes: With his 18th save, DeMark has eclipsed Rommie Lewis's 2014 team record for saves in the first half. He now has 22 in his Revs career, tying Juan Rincon for fourth on the all-time franchise list. Yesterday York also made a trade for Somerset infielder Darwin Perez, who was in uniform tonight, for a player to be named later. York goes for the series win on Saturday night, sending Tony Pena (5-0, 3.27) to the hill against Bridgeport's D.J. Mitchell (1-1, 3.86).
