Straily, River Cats Baffle T-Pads, 6-0
July 23, 2012 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Sacramento River Cats News Release
West Sacramento, Calif. - Dan Straily allowed three hits and two walks with nine strikeouts in six scoreless innings, piloting the River Cats to a 6-0 victory over the Tucson Padres on Monday afternoon at Raley Field.
After a scoreless first inning, the River Cats plated two in the second on a two-run single from Jermaine Mitchell. Neither team would score again until the fifth, when Sacramento scored once on an RBI-single from Anthony Recker, and twice more on a two-run double from Wes Timmons. Collin Cowgill drove in Mitchell on a sacrifice fly in the eighth, giving Straily and the River Cats pitching staff plenty of room to work with as they ultimately shut out the T-Pads, 6-0.
Straily extended his professional baseball-leading strikeout total to 171 with six shutout innings for the win. He has allowed just 20 hits and 14 walks with 63 strikeouts in 47.0 innings with Sacramento this season. The pitcher with the next-highest strikeout total this season is Felix Hernandez of the Seattle Mariners, who has 143 strikeouts in 140.2 innings. Straily has 28 more strikeouts than Hernandez in 8.1 fewer innings (132.1). The victory improves Straily's record to 4-2 in seven starts with Sacramento.
Mitchell finished 2-for-5 with a run, two RBIs and his eighth triple of the season. Recker went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. The River Cats mustered 13 hits in total, leaving 11 men on base. Pedro Figueroa, Chris Ray and Merkin Valdez all tossed one scoreless inning of relief, preserving the three-hit shutout started by Straily.
The win saves the River Cats from suffering their first series-sweep of the season and stops their losing streak at three games-a season-high.
The River Cats now hit the road for eight games before returning home on Aug. 1 when they will kick off Tennessee Week at Raley Field. Tomorrow's game is in Salt Lake City, will begin at 6:05 and will feature righty Bruce Billings (6-3, 3.33 ERA) taking on Bees right-hander Trevor Bell (1-6, 7.27 ERA).
