The Guelph Storm selected 1998 born Russian defenceman Dmitri Samorukov with the 2nd overall pick in the 2016 CHL Import Draft. Last season, Samorukov had four goals and 12 assists for 16 points in 28 games with CSKA Moscow Red Army of the Russian U-17 league.

The 6.3, 174 pound defenceman represented Team Russia at the 2016 U-18 World Junior Championships in Grand Forks, ND as a 16 year old. There he had one goal and four assists in five games at the tournament. His five points tied him for the team lead in scoring. Also playing in the the U-17 World Hockey Championship in Dawson Creek earlier this year, Samorukov recorded two goals in six games.

"We are excited to secure the CHL rights of Dmitri", GM Mike Kelly said. "We will now go through the process of trying to secure his release from the Russian Hockey Federation respecting the time and effort that it may take to bring him to the Storm. I watched him play 6 games in both the five nations in Plymouth and the U-18 in Grand Forks. We feel he is a potential top NHL pick in the upcoming draft."
