Stinson, Tides Silence G-Braves, 2-1

NORFOLK, VA -Norfolk right-hander Josh Stinson became one of the few pitches to hold down the Gwinnett offense this season, as he helped the Tides (6-5) finish the two-game sweep of the G-Braves (5-6) with a 2-1 win on Sunday afternoon at Harbor Park.

The G-Braves got on the board first, scoring their lone run of the game in the top of the second inning. Catcher Matt Pagnozzi drew a one out walk off of Stinson. With two outs, third baseman Alden Carrithers dropped a single to shallow left putting runners on first and second. Then, Corey Wimberly hit into a potential inning-ending fielder's choice, but Tides' shortstop Jonathan Schoop dropped the exchange from the second baseman, allowing Wimberly to reach. Scott Kazmar followed with a bases loaded walk, making it 1-0.

The Tides evened things up in the bottom of the fifth off of Gwinnett starter, Yohan Flande. Catcher Chris Robinson walked with one out and advanced to third on a wild pitch by Flande. Center fielder Jason Pridie knotted it up at 1-1 with a single to centerfield, scoring Robinson from third.

The Tides would edge ahead in the bottom of the sixth. Designated hitter Russ Canzler tripled to center off the glove of the Wimberly to lead off the frame. Canzler then scored from third on a sac fly to right by third baseman Danny Valencia.

That would be all the Tides would need, as the Braves offense would be held without a hit the rest of the way.

Carpenter (L, 1-2) picked up the loss in the relief of Flande. He worked 3.2 innings, giving up one hit, one earned run while fanning one. Flande went 4.1 innings, allowing three hits and one run in his first start since last season.

Stinson (W, 1-0) picked up the win, going 6.2 innings. He allowed three hits and one unearned run. The right-hander walked three and struck out three. The bullpen finished off the game for the Tides, tossing 2.1 innings of scoreless baseball. Former G-Brave, Scott Proctor picked up the save, tossing a scoreless ninth.

Tyler Pastornicky paced the Braves with a 2-for-4 day, while Carrithers had the only other hit.

Canzler was 2-for-3 for Norfolk with a double and a triple. Pridie and L.J. Hoes each had one hit.

The G-Braves return home Monday night to begin a four game series with Norfolk. Daniel Rodriguez (0-1, 48.60) will get the start for Gwinnett. Zach Clark (0-1, 5.19) will go for the Tides, as the G-Braves hope to snap their current two-game losing streak. Tony Schiavone will have the call on WDUN AM 550/FM 102.9 with a 6:05 p.m. first pitch.
