Stingrays Win Wild One Over Gladiators 6-4

North Charleston, SC - Jeff Corey and Travis Morin each scored two goals as the South Carolina Stingrays beat the Gwinnett Gladiators 6-4 at the North Charleston Colisuem.

"I like the way we responded defensively in the final two periods," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "I'm really glad that Duchesne was able to get in and play so well tonight."

The Rays took the early lead in what was a back and forth first period of play. At the 3:26 mark, Jeff Corey got his 12th goal of the year knocking in a rebound from a Scott Romfo shot. The goal was assisted by Romfo and Pierre-Luc O'Brien and made it a 1-0 game. Just after the halfway point of the period, the Gladiators tied the game up at one on a Jeff Mason goal. The Rays would retake the lead less than two minutes later on a tip in by Travis Morin. The power play goal, Morin's 18th of the year, was assisted by Brad Farynuk at the 12:28 mark of the period. The Gladiators would strike twice more, on goals by Adam Berti and Pat Bateman, giving them a 3-2 lead going into the second period.

The second period was even wilder than the first. After giving up an early goal to Brennan Turner to make it 4-2, the Rays scored back to back goals to tie up the game. At 2:30 of the period, O'Brien got his 15th goal of the season, assisted by Trent Campbell and Corey to make it 4-3. The tying goal would come more than 15 minutes later on a power play goal by Corey, his second goal of the night. The goal came at 18:08 from Campbell and O'Brien. With :25 seconds left in the period, the real action occurred. After an offsides call against the Stingrays, a shot was taken at goalie Dan Turple. Taking exception to the shot, Turple came out of his crease to go after one of the Stingrays' players. In retaliation, Jonathan Boutin flew across the ice and dropped his gloves to fight Turple. Both goalies received fighting majors, with Turple getting a roughing minor as well. Boutin also received a minor for leaving the crease, another minor for instigating and was ejected with a game misconduct penalty for not having his jersey tied down. Jeremy Duchesne came in to take over for Boutin in net.

Duchesne played strong in the third period and gave the Rays the opportunity to take the lead. They would finally retake the lead at the 13:10 mark of the period on a Michael Dubuc goal, his team leading 35th of the year. The goal was assisted by Morin and Maxime Lacroix and turned out to be the game winner. At 16:59, Morin put the nail in the coffin by netting his second goal of the night, his 19th of the year, a power play tally from Scott Romfo and Josh Godfrey to make it 6-4, the eventual final.

The winning goaltender was Duchesne who stopped all 13 shots he faced in the 20:26 he was in the game. Boutin stopped 14 of the 18 shots he faced in 39:34, but did not factor in the decision. The losing goaltender was Turple who stopped 26 of the 32 shots he faced. The Rays went 3-8 on the power play while killing off five of the seven short handed situations they faced.

The Rays will be back in action on Friday night as they welcome in the Trenton Devils of the Northern Division looking to avenge their 9-7 loss from last week. Game time is at 7:05 P.M.
