North Charleston, SC - The Kelly Cup Champion South Carolina Stingrays and Head Coach/Director of Hockey Operations Cail MacLean announced today that forward Trent Campbell and defenseman Johann Kroll have signed with the team. In keeping with club policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
Campbell, 26, returns to the Stingrays after competing in 37 regular season games last year. The Beauval, SASK native scored eleven goals and 27 assists for 38 points. Campbell also appeared in all 23 playoff contests for the Stingrays earning 24 points (6g, 18a) as the team claimed their ECHL-record third Kelly Cup title.
"Trent has been one of our most consistent players over the last two years," said Stingrays Head Coach Cail MacLean. "His combination of offensive ability, defensive awareness and grit makes him a key addition to our lineup."
The 5-foot-10, 175-pound left-winger also split time last season with Portland and Worcester of the American Hockey League. For Campbell, this will be his third season suiting up in a Stingrays uniform. Kroll, 25, competed in 40 games last season for South Carolina tallying one goal and 21 assists for 22 points. Along with Campbell, the Plymouth, Minnesota native played in 2009 postseason scoring eleven points (1g, 10a) in 20 games.
"We are very excited to have a defenseman of Johann's caliber return to the organization," MacLean said. "He is a huge contributor in both ends of the arena and he is an excellent teammate all the way around."
The 6-foot-2, 200-pound defenseman saw time last year with the AHL's Hershey Bears and Syracuse Crunch contributing two assists in 28 games. Kroll spent four seasons at Ohio State University before moving to the professional ranks. While with the Buckeyes, the three-time Ohio State Scholar-Athlete and a two-time Academic All-Big Ten choice scored 27 points (5g, 22a) in 153 games.
