Sting & Lambton College Announce Formal Partnership

A new partnership between Lambton College and the Sarnia Sting will enhance experiential learning opportunities for students.

Officials with both organizations announced the formal partnership at the Sarnia Sports & Entertainment Centre earlier today.

The partnership stems from a long-standing relationship between the two organizations, who say they will continue to work together to create educational programming and community engagement initiatives.

Through the new agreement, the Sting organization will offer various opportunities for co-op, internship and work placements to students enrolled in the College's Sports & Recreation Management and newly created Fitness and Health Promotion program to be launched in September 2016. Students from other post-secondary programs as well, most notably in Paramedic, Business Administration and Computer Studies will also benefit with various co-curricular opportunities available. The agreement also includes the establishment of Sarnia Sting scholarships, which will be awarded to two or three students annually who have worked with the organization in a learning capacity. This is part of the Sting's desire to leave a lasting legacy and financially assist students as they pursue post-secondary education.

As part of the partnership, the Sting will have access to the College's Athletics & Fitness Complex for pre-season dry-land training purposes and fitness testing. The new NOVA Chemicals Health & Research Centre will also open the door for collaborative applied research opportunities in the areas of exercise physiology and sport marketing research. The City of Sarnia, the operators of the Sarnia Sports and Entertainment Centre, have also been actively engaged in the discussions and support the creation of the partnership.

Bill Abercrombie, President of the Sarnia Sting Hockey Club, praised the arrangement saying it was long overdue to finalize a formal partnership with the College.

"Our organization has a strong connection with Lambton College through the graduates we've hired and we are looking forward to furthering this by working on applied research projects with their Sports and Recreation Administration and Fitness and Health Promotion students," he said. "This is a partnership that makes sense for both organizations and we are pleased to be aligned with them."

Lambton College President, Judith Morris also heralded the agreement as a winner for both organizations.

"Lambton College and the Sarnia Sting have always worked together to improve opportunities for students and this agreement is a win for all involved," says Judith Morris, President of Lambton College. "Formalizing this partnership means we can continue to provide our students with experiential learning opportunities while working to promote both of our organizations within the community and across the province."

The agreement also notes that academic advising and enrolment assistance will be made available to all Sting players enrolled in a post-secondary program.
