BLOOMINGTON, ILL. - Team Canada announced their roster for the upcoming 2018 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge taking place November 3-10. Flying Aces rookie Stephen Halliday and Flying Aces affiliate player, Josh Barnes, were both selected to represent Team Canada.
This will be the first time Halliday, a Toronto, Ontario native, will be representing his country on the international stage.
"It's a great honor to represent your country and putting on that jersey is something I'll never forget," said Stephen Halliday, "It's something you always dream of doing and now hopefully we can bring home a gold medal."
Halliday was the number one overall pick in the 2018 USHL Phase I Draft and is committed to play at the University of North Dakota. In the season prior to joining the Flying Aces, Halliday registered thirty-six goals and forty-seven assists in fifty-nine games for the Toronto Marlboro Minor Midgets in the Greater Toronto Minor Midget Hockey League. He is one of three current USHL players selected to represent Team Canada with the majority of the other players coming from the CHL.
"It's a great honor for Stephen to be selected to the tournament," said head coach and general manager, Mike Watt, "As a staff, we're excited for this opportunity for him. It will allow him to showcase his talent as one of the top '02 born players in the world."
The Canadian players will be divided into three teams - Team Canada Black, Team Canada Red, and Team Canada White- and will face off against the United States, Sweden, Russia, Finland, and the Czech Republic as they seek to capture gold. The tournament is used to identify players for their potential for future international impact in the IIHF Under-18 World Championships and IIHF World Junior Championships.
The 2018 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge begins with pre-tournament games on Thursday, Nov. 1, and Friday, Nov. 2. This will be followed by group play Nov. 3-7, and concluded with the medal rounds Nov. 8-10.
