North Adams SteepleCats News Release

The North Adams SteepleCats won their second game in a row Saturday night defeating the Sanford Mainers 6-1 at Joe Wolfe Field. The SteepleCats improved to 9-6 on the season with the victory and remain a half a game out of first place in the Northern Division.

"Today was a team win in general," said Head Coach Mike Armstrong. "All the pitchers went out and threw strikes, the defense played great behind them, and offensively we were able to manufacture runs throughout the game."

The 'Cats got the bats going right away with three consecutive singles to load the bases with nobody out in the first inning. Keaton Wright grounded out to advance all three base runners, scoring the first run. Benjamin Bengston followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.

The 'Cats once again loaded the bases in the second inning. With one out, Daniel Holst reached on an error by Mainers shortstop John Cresto, advancing everybody and scoring John Mazza from third. Keaton Wright then hit a sacrifice to give the 'Cats a 4-0 lead.

"All three times I have been on the mound I have gotten run support and that really helps," said 'Cats starter Braxton Wilks. "Being able to take a breath and know that if I give up a run, I still have the lead and even if I give up the lead, I still have an offense that will put up more runs which is what they do best."

Wilks excelled on the mound for the 'Cats and showed everybody why he was named NECBL Pitcher of the Week last week. He lasted six innings, allowed only one run, struck out seven, and at one point retired eight consecutive hitters. He was able to greatly benefit from rest during the SteepleCats' big offensive innings.

"Anytime our offense puts up runs, my job is to come in the next inning and put up a zero," said Wilks. "That is how we keep momentum."

Wilks ran into trouble in the second inning when he faced a bases loaded nobody out jam. He then fielded a ground ball by Tristan Chari and threw home for the first out. He struck out the next two hitters to get the 'Cats out of the jam unscathed.

"I knew I had to get these guys out and keep the momentum on our team," said Wilks. "I was able to do that which was awesome."
