Steel Reel

The Steelheads' season-long eight-game road swing continues on Friday night with their first of only two meetings this season with the Missouri Mavericks, and their first ever visit to Silverstein Eye Centers Arena. The Steelheads look to extend their winning streak to a season-high five games, while the Mavericks continue their push for a playoff spot in the Mountain Division, now sitting just four points behind fourth-place Alaska.

The Steelheads earned their first three-game series sweep of the season on Monday afternoon with a 1-0 win at Maverik Center over the Grizzlies. Kellan Lain scored the game's only goal, his tenth of the season, early in the second period. Landon Bow made 43 saves to earn his first professional shutout, as the Steelheads now have a nine-point cushion on a playoff spot.

Landon Bow Show...

Landon Bow's 43-save shutout performance was just his latest accolade in a solid rookie season between the pipes. After earning his first shutout, Bow improved to 13-3-2 this season, as well as 12-1-1 in his last 14 games. Over that stretch, Bow boasts a 1.96 goals-against average and a .935 save percentage, and he now ranks second in the ECHL and first among rookie goaltenders in both categories this season. Bow has not lost an ECHL game in regulation since November 9th, going 9-0-1 in his last ten games.

Raising the Bar...

The Steelheads hit the ice in Independence for the first time in search of their fifth win in a row, which would serve as the team's longest winning streak since the team won five in a row from March 15th to March 27th during the 2014-15 season. The Steelheads have also won three straight on the road courtesy of their sweep in Utah, the second time this season that they've won three consecutive games away from CenturyLink Arena. The Steelheads have won five of their last six contests to improve their record in February to 5-3-1.

PK Prevails...

Idaho's shutout win on Monday featured another perfect performance from the penalty kill, cancelling all three Utah power plays. The Steelheads have not surrendered a power play goal in their last six contests, killing off the last 24 disadvantages. On the morning of January 21st, the Steelheads penalty kill was listed 18th in the ECHL. In their 14 games since, the Steelheads have operated at 92.6 percent shorthanded and have scored five shorthanded goals, climbing into a tie for fifth in the league on the kill.

About the Mavericks...

The Missouri Mavericks struggled at the beginning of the season, three games under .500 on New Year's Day and ten points outside the playoff picture. In recent weeks, the Mavericks have surged along with the Grizzlies to tighten the playoff picture in the Mountain Division. The Mavericks have won nine of their last 11 contests, and they have games in hand on every team in the division except Alaska. Dane Fox leads Missouri in scoring with 52 points in 50 games, while Darren Nowick's 41 points rank sixth among rookies. The Mavericks have a cast of former Steelheads, including Radoslav Illo from last season's squad, reigning ECHL Goaltender of the Year Josh Robinson, and first-year head coach John-Scott Dickson.
