Steelheads Fall in Colorado

Idaho Steelheads News Release

Loveland, CO - Jesse Mychan scored two goals as part of a three-point night as the Colorado Eagles (39-26-4) defeated the Idaho Steelheads (36-23-10), 5-1 at Budweiser Events Center to sweep the two-game series in Loveland.

The Eagles scored three goals in the second period, turning what was a 1-1 game after 20 minutes into a 4-1 Eagles' lead after two periods. The Eagles were only credited with 19 shots during the game, but were able to cash in on several Steelheads turnovers and some good bounces.

At 2:40 of the second period and with the score tied, Darryl Bootland sent an innocent wrist shot on net from the top of the right circle with no Eagles player near the Idaho goal. The shot ricocheted off a Steelheads defenseman in front and changed direction, zipping over Branden Komm's shoulder for Bootland's 14th goal of the season and a 2-1 Colorado lead.

The Eagles made it 3-1 after a lengthy offensive zone power play shift. The Steelheads had several opportunities to clear the puck but couldn't get clearing attempts past Kyle Kraemer or Giffen Nyren. Nyren fired a slap shot through traffic at 12:26 of the second that hit the post behind Komm, with the rebound laying in the crease for Mychan's 29th of the season.

Just 42 seconds later, Colorado struck again when Trent Daavettila collected a failed clearing attempt and threw a wrister down low for a Derek Rodwell deflection, his fourth goal of the year. The Steelheads would go to the locker room trailing 4-1 and would start the third period shorthanded for five minutes after Zach Bell was given a fighting major and game misconduct for an altercation with Mychan after the period ended.

The Steelheads killed off the major, as well as two other minors in the third, but Mychan would punch home a rebound in the final minute of play for his 30th of the season, second-most in the ECHL.

Everett Sheen opened the scoring at 7:42 of the first period, his third goal in the two game series. The Steelheads responded at 14:47 with Kruise Reddick's second goal of his four-game professional career, burying a nifty pass feathered into open space in front of the Eagles' net by Kyle Jean.

The Steelheads' loss, combined with the Utah Grizzlies' win over the Alaska Aces, creates a tight grouping at the top of the West Division. Idaho, Colorado, and Utah all have 82 points in the standings.

Due to a greater number of wins in regulation and overtime, the Eagles move into first place in the division. The Steelheads maintain their lead over the Grizzlies because they hold one game in hand, but Idaho does fall to fifth in the Western Conference.

The Steelheads look for important points in their final road game of the season on Tuesday night at Rushmore Plaza Civic Center against the Rapid City Rush. Puck-drop is scheduled for 6:35pm MT, with the game available on ECHLTV and 1350KTIK.
