Loveland, CO (12/10/16)- Anthony Luciani registered his first two-goal game of the season for Idaho, but it wasn't enough as Matt Garbowsky's tally in the opening round of the shootout paced the Colorado Eagles (14-6-4) to a 4-3 shootout win over the Idaho Steelheads (13-8-3) at Budweiser Events Center.

Garbowsky's slow breakaway deke around Philippe Desrosiers was the only goal of the shootout, as Luciani, Jefferson Dahl, and Charlie Dodero were unable to solve Nathan Lieuwen in the breakaway contest. The Steelheads are now 4-1 in shootouts this season.

Tied 3-3 in overtime, the Eagles had a chance to put the game away when Travis Walsh was sent off for tripping. During the ensuing power play, Dodero and Corbin Baldwin remained on the ice for nearly the whole kill, blocking numerous shots behind solid work from Travis Ewanyk and later Kellan Lain. Ewanyk deflected a Dodero shot off the outside of the Colorado net just as overtime expired.

The Eagles jumped out to an early lead, with Jesse Mychan's right-wing wrist shot beating Desrosiers' blocker at 1:01 of the first period. Desrosiers was solid for the remainder of the period, stopping 16 shots in the first period on his way to a 44-save night.

The Steelheads tied the game at 7:42 of the second period, a Zach Bell shot right off a face-off win kicked to the far corner by Lieuwen but right to Luciani for his eighth of the season. At 18:47 of the second, Idaho would take the lead when Dahl found a rebound of a Lain shot on a 5-on-3 power play, burying his ninth of the year for a 2-1 lead.

Dahl had two assists to go along with his second period goal. After missing two games, Dahl returned for the final two contests of the Colorado series and posted four points to raise his season total to 27.

The Eagles tied the game just 1:41 into the third period on Matt Register's sixth of the season, a shot from the left circle after a feed from behind the net by Casey Pierro-Zabotel. At 6:00 of the third and on a Colorado power play, Register fed Jake Marto for a one-time drive at the right point that beat Desrosiers and put the Eagles ahead 3-2.

Luciani grabbed his second goal of the night just 31 seconds later to tie the game, a Dodero shot from the right circle bouncing to the goalmouth for Luciani to tap in for his ninth of the year.

The Steelheads grabbed one of six points on their three-game trip to Colorado, failing to grab a win in a three-game series for just the first time since last November 5th, a series against the Atlanta Gladiators. The Steelheads are in third place in the Mountain Division, three points behind the division-leading Eagles.

The Steelheads' schedule resumes Wednesday back on home ice when they face the Rapid City Rush for the first of three games. Puck-drop is scheduled for 7:10pm MT, with the game available on 1350AM KTIK, Cable One, and ECHLTV.

PLAY OF THE GAME:

The Steelheads survived to the shootout because of one of their best penalty kills of the season, a three man unit starting with Charlie Dodero, Corbin Baldwin, and Travis Ewanyk and finishing with Dodero, Baldwin, and Kellan Lain. The Colorado power play is loaded with scoring options from Jesse Mychan and Casey Pierro-Zabotel to blue-liners Jake Marto and Matt Register, to name a few. The Steelheads blocked numerous shots and whittled down the clock, while Philippe Desorsiers made several big saves and controlled the puck down low. The performance didn't earn Idaho any extra points in the standings, but it kept play alive long enough for two prime chances from Ewanyk and Jefferson Dahl.
