Alabama Steeldogs News Release

Hidalgo, Tex. - The Alabama Steeldogs 2007 season came to an end Sunday night at the hands of the top-ranked Rio Grande Valley Dorados, 44-41, in the first round of the National Conference af2 playoffs.

The Steeldogs took a 41-38 lead in the game with 1:38 left to play on a Nick Hayes 20-yard field goal. The Dorados responded, however, with an 11-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Josh Kellett to receiver Coco Blalock with 19 second left to play.

A Steeldogs hail mary fell short as the clock expired, sending the Dorados into the second round for a matchup at home with the Bossier-Shreveport Battlewings.

The Steeldogs struggled to put points on the board in the fourth quarter, and were forced to settle for two Nick Hayes field goals.

The Steeldogs' first playoff game since the 2004 season proved to be a physical battle, full of big hits and injuries. Alabama's John Mohring led all players in the game on defense with 8.5 total tackles.

Rio Grande Valley quarterback Josh Kellett led all players offensively, completing 24-of-45 passes for 258 yards and six touchdowns.

The Dorados and Bossier-Shreveport Battlewings face off in the second round next Saturday night at the Dodge Center in Hidalgo.
