Chicago Steel News Release

GENEVA, ILLINOIS - Five different players tallied goals, and Peter Thome made 26 saves, as the Chicago Steel (24-8-1-3, 52 pts.) skated to a 5-1 victory Friday over the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders (5-29-1-1, 12 pts.) at Fox Valley Ice Arena. Walker Duehr recorded two (1+1) points. The Steel went 7-for-7 on the penalty kill, including a five-minute major late in the game. With the win, Chicago sweeps the five-game season series with Cedar Rapids.

Steel left wing Reggie Lutz opened the scoring on a wraparound goal 5:12 into the game. Later in the opening frame, Marc Johnstone connected a pass to Jack Badini, who raced in on a breakaway and bounced a shot through the five-hole of RoughRiders netminder Drew DeRidder at 10:30. The goal was Badini's team-leading 17th tally of the season. Chicago carried its two-goal lead into the first intermission while outshooting the visitors, 10-7.

Cedar Rapids controlled much of the game's second period, registering 14 shots. Just three seconds after a Steel penalty expired, the RoughRiders ended Thome's shutout bid on their 21st shot of the night. Cedar Rapids right wing Steven Agriogianis fired a shot from the left circle that beat Thome near the blocker with 19.2 seconds remaining in the period.

Chicago went back up by a pair early in the third period when the Steel's leading rookie point scorer, Baker Shore, cashed in off an end-wall feed from Eduards Tralmaks at 2:24. Duehr then scored a power play goal at 4:39 to put the home team up by three.

The game became more physical as the period progressed. Chicago's Johnny Walker and Cedar Rapids' Sam Fuss dropped the gloves at the 11:11 mark. Steel captain Marc Johnstone then stood up for his linemate, Badini, after a questionable hit in neutral ice by Cedar Rapids winger Jordan Timmons, as the game saw its second fight in under two minutes of play.

With a major penalty assessed to Johnstone, and DeRidder pulled in favor of an extra attacker, Chicago found itself in a 6-on-4 disadvantage late in the game. Jake Jaremko recorded a shorthanded empty-net goal with 3:33 remaining, sending the Steel to a four-goal win.

Thome is now 3-0-0-1 since being acquired by Chicago in late November. Lutz's goal was his team-leading 32nd point of the season. The Steel's season sweep of the RoughRiders comes one season after registering an 0-3-0-1 record against Cedar Rapids in 2015-2016.

Chicago's season-long eight-game homestand continues with a Wayne's World 25th Anniversary Celebration Saturday, Jan. 28 against the Bloomington Thunder. Fans are encouraged to dress up as Wayne and Garth from the popular Aurora-based movie. The night's festivities will include a pre-game performance by the School of Rock house band. Puck drop is set for 7:05 p.m. For tickets or more information, call 855-51-STEEL, stop by the Box Office at Fox Valley Ice Arena or visit ChicagoSteelHockeyTeam.com.
