Medicine Hat Tigers News Release

Medicine Hat, AB -- It all came down to the final game of the regular season to see some heroics as the Tigers and Hurricanes faced off in a rematch as 24 hours ago the 'Canes clinched the Central Division. Medicine Hat has been hot down the stretch and they looked to continue that play Saturday night.

With the Memorial Cup in attendance and the Tigers honoring some alumni in a pre-game ceremony, the Canalta Centre was electric as 5006 fans packed the arena. Nick Heid kick started the action 5 seconds in as he and Darian Skeoch dropped the mitts to set the tone. Both combatants were kicked out of the game after the ref deemed the fight staged, a league no-no. After the fight the Tigers seemed to feed off the energy provided as Ty Schultz got the game's opening goal, just his 3rd of the season. Just after the midway point in the frame however the Canes would get on the board themselves with a power play marker as Jordy Bellerive netted his 11th of the year which knotted the game at 1. Medicine Hat got another spark from their second power play unit when Ryan Jevne blasted home a one timer for his 6th of the season as the Tabbies took a 2-1 lead into the break.

The second period was end to end action but both Nick Schneider and Jayden Sittler stood tall stopping all shots their way. Schneider was electric in goal for the Tabbies as he smothered anything that came towards him. For the Tigers however, they threw every puck they had on goal from all angles, testing the Lethbridge backup. The score remained 2-1 after 40 minutes, as one period stood from the tie breaker game or going home.

In the third period the game was even more electric as the fans were into the game with every shot and every play. Brian Williams kick started a two goal lead as he drove the net and a Clayton Kirichenko point shot bounced off his pants and through the legs of Sittler for a 3-1 lead. Lethbridge's Arvin Atwal scored his 11th of the season to cut into the lead as he let a wrist shot from the point go, which found the top corner past a screened Schneider. Medicine Hat played some tough defense down the stretch as the pace was high and the action was end to end. Medicine Hat proved to be too much for the Canes on this night as Zach Fischer scored into an empty net to seal the deal and a 4-2 victory.
