STAUMONT SHINES AS NATURALS SHUTOUT TRAVS IN HOME FINALE

RHP Josh Staumont tosses 6.0 scoreless innings in the 2-0 shutout win over the Arkansas Travelers

SPRINGDALE, Ark - For the second time this homestand RHP Josh Staumont shined as the Northwest Arkansas Naturals (26-37/65-68) shutout the Arkansas Travelers (28-35/60-73) by a 2-0 final in the regular season home finale at Arvest Ballpark on Monday night. The win allowed the Naturals to avoid the 3-game sweep and finish the 7-game homestand with a 4-3 record.

Staumont (W, 3-3) made his second start of the homestand and was arguably more dominant than the first when he fired 7.0 no-hit innings against the Springfield Cardinals on August 23. Tonight the right-hander was in complete control throughout as he limited the Arkansas offense to only two hits in 6.0 scoreless innings of work. He finished with eight strikeouts, which matched his total from the previous start, and only had one walk compared to the five free passes he issued against Springfield.

Newcomer RHP Walker Sheller (S, 1), whom was called up to Northwest Arkansas from Wilmington (Advanced-A) earlier in the day, made a great first impression with his new club. The young righty fired 3.0 scoreless innings of relief to register the rare three-inning save as he struck out four without a walk. The hard-throwing duo combined for 12-to-1 strikeout to walk ratio.

Offensively the Naturals jumped out in front in the series finale as they would do all of their scoring in the second. Back-to-back singles by Alfredo Escalera and Anderson Miller put runners at the corners. Humberto Arteaga followed with a sacrifice fly to left to score Escalera. Then after a double by Carlos Diaz, Nicky Lopez brought in Miller with a RBI groundout for the 2-0 lead.

Northwest Arkansas banged out 11 hits in the game compared to only four for North Little Rock. Escalera led the offensive attack by going 3-for-4 on the night while Lopez and Donnie Dewees, Jr. each registered multi-hit games.

Tonight's game concluded the home portion of the 2017 regular season. Northwest Arkansas will now hit the road for a 7-game road trip to conclude the regular season with a 4-game series in Tulsa before ending the year with a 3-game series against the Travelers in North Little Rock over Labor Day weekend. By virtue of winning the First Half Texas League North Division Title, the Northwest Arkansas Naturals will return to Arvest Ballpark on Wednesday, September 6 at 7:05 p.m. for Game 1 of the Texas League North Divisional Series. They will also host Game 2 of the Texas League North Divisional Series on Thursday, September 7 at 7:05 p.m. Gates open at 5:45 p.m. both nights and the opponent will either be the Springfield Cardinals or Tulsa Drillers.
