Stars win 11th Straight Over Braves
April 19, 2008 - Southern League (SL1) - Mississippi Braves News Release
The Mississippi Braves tied a franchise record by losing their eighth straight game Saturday night. In the process, they also lost their 11th straight game to the Huntsville Stars.
The M-Braves got out to an early lead as they manufactured a run in the bottom of the first. Carl Loadenthal drew a walk to get things started and Javier Guzman bunted him over to second. Loadenthal stole third and Diory Hernandez brought him home with a single to left. After one, Mississippi led 1-0.
The lead wouldn't last. Huntsville took the lead with four runs in the top of the second. Chris Errecart led off with a single to right and Matt LaPorta then hammered his second homer of the year out to left. Both of his homeruns in 2008 have come against the M-Braves. Michael Bell drew a walk and Cole Gillespie drove him home with a triple down the right field line. Steve Hammond's broken-bat single to center plated Gillespie and put the Stars up 4-1.
The Stars tacked on a run in the fourth. Gillespie walked, stole second, and scored on Hammond's double to left.
Gillespie led off the Stars four-run sixth with a walk. Angel Salome singled to move Gillespie into scoring position and Michael Brantley's single to right brought him to the plate. Alcides Escobar's second homer of the year was a three-run shot that gave the Stars a 9-1 lead.
Diory Hernandez hit his second homer in as many nights in the eighth inning to make the score 9-2.
LaPorta's RBI-double in the ninth made the final 10-2.
Dan Smith suffered his fourth loss of 2008 in only his fourth start. He gave up seven runs on nine hits through 5.1 innings. Carlos Sencion gave up two runs on two hits in two-thirds of an inning. Jerome Gamble threw two shutout innings and Sung Ki Jung gave up a run in the ninth.
Steve Hammond gave up a run on four hits through six innings of work. EJ Shanks threw a shutout inning and Rusty Tucker gave up one run in two innings.
The Braves and Stars will play game two of this five-game series Sunday afternoon at 1:05 pm. The Braves will send righty James Parr to the hill in search of his first win while the Stars will counter with lefty Derek Miller who's also going for his first win.
As is always the case, Sunday features Comcast Cable Kids Run the Bases where any children under the age of 14 can run the bases at Trustmark Park after the game.
