Lincoln Stars News Release

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Lincoln Stars (3-1-0-0) battled back and forth with the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders (2-2-0-0) in a thrilling third period but fell short 4-2 on Friday night at Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.

The opening period started physical but stayed close throughout the frame with both the Stars and RoughRiders gaining multiple opportunities to jump ahead and grab the game's first goal. However, the RoughRiders snagged the first goal at 13:33 when forward Liam Walsh touched in a crossing puck coming from the left point through the slot to the back door to edge ahead, 1-0. The Stars did have a strong opportunity at the outset of the second period on a five-minute major power play, however the RoughRiders thwarted those advances and the game went into the third period at the same scoreline.

The Stars broke through with a little luck at 2:43 when a shot from defenseman Eero Terî=A4vî=A4inen hopped off the glove of the waiting netminder and snuck behind him to level the score, 1-1. The RoughRiders answered back though with quick puck movement and a finish from forward Marek Valach at 8:26 to take back the lead, 2-1. The score continued to see-saw, and Stars defenseman Mason Klee scored the first shorthanded goal of the season at 11:08 when a soft shot from the right circle beat through the netminder to tie the game, 2-2. From there, the RoughRiders found two more answers at 13:52 from Roman Ahcan on a re-direction down low followed by a tertiary attempt by forward Josh Brolin at 18:45 to settle the scoring at 4-2.

RoughRiders goaltender Jiri Patera (2-2-0) earned the win, halting 28 of 30 shots, while Stars netminder Tomáœ=A1 Vomá=C4=8Dka (3-1-0) was given the loss, turning away 28 of 32 shots. The Stars continue their four-game road trip and open the Nebraska Cup against the Tri-City Storm on Saturday, Oct. 20 at 7:35 p.m. from Viaero Center. Coverage begins 13 minutes prior to faceoff on 93.7 The Ticket, HockeyTV and Lincoln Stars Radio.
