Stars come back to beat Jaxx; snaps four-game win streak

HUNTSVILLE, ALA. (AUGUST 17, 2009) - The Diamond Jaxx (27-24) suffer a heartbreaking 4-3 loss to the Huntsville Stars (19-31) on Monday night, snapping the Jaxx current four game winning streak. The Jaxx led throughout the entirety until the Stars plated three runs in the eighth to take a 4-3 lead. Drew Anderson and Taylor Green each pick up two hit games for Huntsville as the Stars out-hit the Jaxx in game one 9-4. Huntsville snaps a current four game winning streak the Jaxx held over the Stars, but Huntsville leads the season series 14-6. Ezequiel Carrera paced the Jaxx offense, finishing 2-for-4 with a run scored. Also, Matt Mangini extends his hitting streak, for the Jaxx to six games with a 1-for-4 day at the plate.

The Diamond Jaxx got the scoring started early on Monday night in Huntsville, scoring three in the top of the first. With the bases loaded, Guillermo Quiroz plated Ezequiel Carrera by reaching on an error. Johan Limonta followed with an RBI single scoring Greg Halman. The final run of the first was brought in when Matt Mangini grounded into a double-play scoring Marshall Hubbard. Stars starter, Brandon Kintzler allowed three runs in the first inning for the second time in three starts.

The starter for Huntsville, Brandon Kintzler settled down and put up zeros in the second-fifth innings. Kintzler surrendered three runs on four hits in five innings of work.

Huntsville finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth inning. Taylor Green ripped a pitch from Robert Rohrbaugh for an RBI single, cutting the lead to 3-1. Rohrbaugh was relieved by Anthony Varvaro in the sixth inning. The outing by Varvaro marked the first time in 19.2 innings pitched that a reliever had entered a game. Nick Hill and Steve Bray combined for a two complete games on Saturday night, and Rohrbugh worked 5.2 on Monday night.

The Stars offense was awoken in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Stars took a 4-3 lead by plating three runs. Chuckie Caufield singled off of Jaxx closer, Phillipe Aumont (1-3) scoring Jonathan Lucroy. The next batter, Freddy Parejo dropped a base hit down the first base line that scored Taylor Green and Caufield. The back-to-back hits off of Aumont gave the Stars a 4-3 lead. Lucroy opened the inning with a double, giving him a double in each of his last seven games. He also extends his hitting streak to 17 games.

Zach Braddock (1-1) earns his first Double-A victory working a scoreless eighth inning for the Stars. Rob Wooten (S, 9) picks up his second consecutive save, retiring the Jaxx in order in the ninth.

The Jaxx will look to even the series on Tuesday night with game two beginning at 7:00 PM at Joe Davis Stadium, in Huntsville. RHP Luis Munoz (6-6, 4.53) takes the mound for the Diamond Jaxx looking to become the team leader in wins. Opposing the Jaxx, for Huntsville will be RHP Nick Green (0-3, 4.26).
