DES MOINES, IA - Iowa Stars Director of Hockey Operations Scott White announced today that the Dallas Stars have assigned defenseman John Erskine (ER-skin) to the Des Moines-based American Hockey League team for conditioning. Iowa also signed defenseman Jonathan Zion (ZI-yawn) to an American Hockey League Professional Tryout Contract (PTO).
Drafted by the Dallas Stars in the second round, 39th overall, in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft, John Erskine has appeared in 95 career NHL games, notching 220 penalty minutes, two goals and two assists: 95(2/2/4)220. The Kingston, Ontario native has played in 329 professional games, recording 1152 PIM's, 10 goals, and 31 assists: 329(10/31/41)1152.
In 1999, Erskine was awarded the Max Kaminsky Trophy as the OHL Defenseman of the Year and was named to the OHL First All-Star Team. He finished the 2000-01 International Hockey League (IHL) season with 284 PIM's, third overall.
Currently skating in his fourth professional season, Zion has appeared in 16 games for the Idaho Steelheads this season. The Ottawa, Ontario native is tied for first among all ECHL defensemen with 18 points, via five goals and 13 assists: 16(5/13/18). His 18 points also have him in the Top 15 among all ECHL point-getters. He recently registered one goal and one assist in the Steelheads 7-4 win over the Utah Grizzlies. Last season with Idaho, the 6-1, 210-pound defenseman had seven goals and 30 assists in 65 contests: 65(7/30/37).
NEXT GAME: The Iowa Stars travel to Omaha for their third game in seven nights against the Knights on Friday night. Iowa returns home for a 7:05 PM face-off with the Peoria Rivermen on Saturday night. Remember, the conclusion of the November 13th game will be played at this time as well. The two teams will take an 18-minute intermission and then begin the regularly scheduled game. Doors open for all games one-hour before face-off.
