Stansberry Leads Four-Run, Game-Winning Rally In Ninth

July 6, 2008 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Portland Beavers News Release

PORTLAND, Ore. - Craig Stansberry hit a game-tying, three-run homer and Chip Ambres scored the winning run after Will Venable beat out an infield single with two outs as the Portland Beavers overcame a three-run deficit in the ninth to beat the Tacoma Rainiers 4-3 before 5,667 Sunday afternoon at PGE Park.

Held scoreless on three hits over the first eight innings and trailing 3-0, the Beavers (46-42) went to work against newly installed reliever Mumba Rivera in the ninth. Colt Morton drew a leadoff walk, Tom King singled up the middle, and Stansberry drilled a 3-2 pitch over the wall in left to tie things at 3-3. Ambres singed with one out, moved to second on a single up the middle by Justin Huber and scored all the way from second as shortstop Tug Hulett's throw to first didn't arrive in time to get Venable, who extended his hitting streak to seven games, and Ambres narrowly beat the ensuing throw to the plate.

The win, Portland's fourth in its last five games, helped the Beavers move to within 6.5 games of the division lead, as Salt Lake suffered a 5-3 loss to Tucson on Sunday. It was also Portland's eight win of the season when trailing after eight innings.

Victor Diaz and Prentice Redman hit home runs for the Rainiers (45-45), who missed their chance to move into a second-place tie with Portland in the North Division.

After the dust settled, reliever Edwin Moreno (4-1) was credited with the win after recording an inning of perfect work for his 13th consecutive scoreless appearance with the Beavers, who begin a four-game series at Fresno on Monday.

Rivera (0-1) gave up all four runs in the ninth for the loss, Tacoma's fifth in its last six games.

Diaz opened the scoring with a two-run homer off Portland starter Clay Hensley with Hulett aboard and two outs in the third. It remained 2-0 until the sixth when Redman hit a solo homer, his third in six games against the Beavers this season.

NOTES: The Beavers drew 26,531 fans over the three-game series with the Rainiers, an average of 8,844 per game ... Tacoma starter Chris Jakubauskas left the game with two outs in the bottom of the second after suffering an apparent injury while pitching to Morton ... former Beaver Jared Wells retired three of the four batters he faced in the eighth in his first appearance as an opposing player at PGE Park ... Venable has hit safely in 26 of his last 30 games.
