Wichita Wingnuts News Release

WICHITA, KS - In the world of sports the difficulty in transitioning from one level to the next is well-known. Whether an athlete is advancing from high school to collegiate athletics or taking on the professional ranks for the first time, a period of readjustment is expected. The Wichita Wingnuts most recently announced 2016 signee, Alex Boshers, took no time at all to feel comfortable as a pro. The rookie saw a marked improvement on nearly all of his college statistics in his first year playing professional baseball.

Boshers played five seasons of college ball at the University of Tennessee-Martin. Over his first three seasons he combined to post a 6-16 record with an earned run average of 7.11. Six innings into his senior season, Boshers injured his arm and was forced to miss the rest of the campaign. He recovered while earning a fifth year of eligibility and went 1-4 with a 6.15 ERA in 19 games, six of them starts for the Skyhawks.

The 24-year old joined the Wingnuts on a wild six-transaction day in late June. He pitched in both ends of a doubleheader on the same night that he was signed, tossing four scoreless innings between the two appearances. In 28 regular season appearances Boshers pitched 27 times out of the bullpen, finished 14 games, and made one start. He allowed 43 hits in 48.1 innings while striking out twenty-nine. Having allowed just ten earned runs all season, he finished with a 4-2 record and the lowest earned run average of any member of the bullpen. The native of Nashville won the Wingnuts Unsung Hero Award following the regular season.

Boshers is the seventh player to sign with the Wingnuts for next season. During the pre-season, a maximum of 28 players may be under contract with the team. The active roster must be trimmed to 23 two days before the start of the regular season. The ninth season of Wichita Wingnuts baseball begins on Thursday, May 19th against the Lincoln Saltdogs. For information on season tickets, group outings, and party packages, call the Wingnuts' main office at (316) 264-NUTS, or visit the Wingnuts' official website at www.wichitawingnuts.com.
