Stamps Mourn Death of Fred James
June 16, 2016 - Canadian Football League (CFL)
Calgary Stampeders News Release
It is with great sadness that the Stampeders learn of the death of alumnus Fred James. He was 71.
An important part of a great defensive line that helped the Stampeders win a Grey Cup in 1971, James played 112 regular-season games for the Stamps from 1967-75. He also appeared in 15 playoff games and played in three Grey Cups for the Stamps including the victory in 1971. He was traded to the Edmonton Eskimos in 1975 and won a second Grey Cup that season before retiring.
The Edmonton native and University of Alberta alum served on the executive of the junior Calgary Colts and was part of national championship teams in 1989 and 1990.
In addition to his football career, James also worked in the insurance industry.
A celebration of life will be held at the Red and White Club (McMahon Stadium; 1817 Crowchild Trail NW) on Monday, June 20 at 2 p.m.
