Stampeders Mourn Death of Lovell Coleman

It is with great sadness that the Stampeders learn of the passing of Lovell Coleman. He died on Aug. 10 in Kamloops at the age of 78.

A product of Hamtramck, Mich., and Western Michigan University, Coleman joined the Stampeders in 1960 and remained with the club through 1967. He won a pair of CFL rushing titles with Calgary is the fifth all-time leading rusher in Stamps history with 6,395 yards. The 1,629 yards he amassed in 1964 stand as the fourth best single-season total in franchise history.

Coleman still owns the Stamps' single-game rushing record with 238 yards against Hamilton on Sept. 14, 1964. He also has the third-best single-game total with 224 yards in a 1965 contest against Edmonton.

In 1964, Coleman became the first Stampeder to be named the CFL's Most Outstanding Player. He was added to the Stampeders' Wall of Fame in 1999.

Coleman finished his career with a couple of seasons as a backup on two different teams, with Ottawa in 1968 and, after a one-year hiatus, with BC in 1970.

Coleman became a Canadian citizen during his playing career and remained in the country after retiring. Ho operated his own business in Vancouver for more than 20 years before retiring and settling in Barriere, B.C.
